XING vs. CROSSING

　　今天的课又讲到语言意识形态，我又想起以前一件很尴尬的事情。没时间深写，先把事情记着吧。
　　我刚来美国的时候，看到马路上很多地方都有这个标志：

　　一般来说，只要有人行横道，就会有这样的标志。PED很好理解，就是“行人”（pedestrian），ped是“脚”的词根，但XING是什么意思呢？
　　我有很长一段时间，都以为那是汉语拼音的“行”。因为想当然地觉得可能华人不大守规矩，喜欢乱穿马路，这儿又是华人聚集的地区，所以在交通标志里特意加上汉语拼音，提醒人们：这个地方才是可以横跨马路的。
　　但我还是觉得这太夸张了点，因为美国社会对这种涉及种族的细节还是很敏感的。所以终于有一天，我问了一个美国同学。她告诉我，这个XING是“Crossing”（横跨）的缩写，X就代表“cross”（交叉）。
　　我当时挺羞愧的，似乎一个很深的自卑心理被挖了出来，同时又觉得里面有很多元素挺值得考究的：身份认同、想象的族群、固有原型（stereotype）、语域（linguistic register）与权力，等等。
　　后来我问了很多中国同学，他们也倾向于以为这是汉语拼音。后来我又查了一下Urban Dictionary，发现这个XING的“笑话”果然很普及。例如，许多条目的例句是这样的：
Ped Xing is not one of the names of Chinese historical figures, it simply means a shortened pedestrian crossing sign.
ANGELA: When I was a little girl, I used to think that the Chinese built the roads in America -- someone must have told me the Chinese built the railroads and I guess I got confused. When the Chinese workers finished paving the road, they'd write "PED XING" on it in big white letters, in honor of who I assumed was their emperor or something: "Ped Ching."
