The Chronicle of the Silmarillion

以下這幾段高亮顯示的文字是J.R.R. Tolkien假託古代英國人【Ælfwine，亦名Eriol】記載的關於世界起源的編年史（實為J.R.R. Tolkien本人所作），也就是他神話體系的「來源」。

這是原文出處，我搬運過來，按照古英語的「標準」拼寫略微校對（包括長音符、詞語切分），並盡力譯為現代英語。因為我至今未通讀The Silmarillion，也沒有讀過The History of Middle-earth，對文中所涉及各事件、人名地名等不甚熟悉，多有不確定之處，除了查看網頁，只能臨場發揮。另外，這些敘述似乎是托老早年的作品，與最終定稿的The Silmarillion情節未必完全相符。

This tale was first set in books by Pengolod the Philosopher from Gondolin before it was destroyed, and after that at the Havens of Sirion, and at Tavrobel on Tol Eressëa (that is Lonely Island), after he came back to the West; and there it [= the tale] was read and was combined by Ælfwine, whom the elves named Eriol.

The Origin Here Ilúvatar, that is All-father or Heaven-father or Bright-father, first wrought (made) all things.

500 years since [the birth of] the Valar (that is Powers or Gods): one year of the Valar is as long as ten years are in the world now according to the course of the sun. Melkor (that is Pride) or Morgoth (that is Dark-god) cast down the Lights of the Valar, and the Valar turned west and there they wrought Valinor (???), that is the Land of Gods. 【此處言「創造了」Valinor? 按說是撤退至Valinor。語義不解】

1000: Here the Valar (Gods) awoke the Two Trees, Laurelin (that is 'Gold-song') and Silpion 【後名為Telperion】(that is 'Glee-twilight'??)

2000: Valinor's Midday or High Glory. Here the Trees flourished for 2000 years; and Varda (she was the noblest of the goddesses) wrought stars; for that she was called Tinwetári, the Lady of Stars. Here the Elves awoke in Eastlands; and Melkor was captured and bound in prison; and after that some of the Elves came to Valinor.

2000 — 2100: Here Tún (?), the white city, was built on Mount Cór (?). Then the Teleri still dwelt on the West Shores of the Hitherlands (??); but the Teler Thingol was enchanted with (?) the woods.

2100 — 2200: The Teleri dwelt on Lonely Island.

2200: Here the Teleri came unto the Land of the Gods (Valinor).

2500: Here through cunning arts the Noldor devised and made various gems, and Fëanor, Lord of the Noldor, wrought the Silmarils, which were Arclenstones [sic.]. 【可見在早年的構思中Silmaril與arkenstone是一回事】

2000—2900: The captivity of Morgoth.

2900: Here Morgoth was released, and he dwelt in Valinor, and pretended to be kind to the Valar and the Elves.

MMDCCCCXCIX Hér ofslóh Morgoð þá Béamas ond oþfléah, 7 ætferede mid him þára Elfa gimmas 7 þá Eorclanstánas. Siþþan forléton þá Noldelfe hiera hyldo, and éodon on elþéodignes, 7 gefuhton wið þá Telere æt Elfethýðe 7 sige námon 7 ætferedon þá Teleriscan scipu.

Hér wearð micel gesweorc 7 genipu on Godéðle 7 ofer ealne middangeard. Þá hwíle edníwede Morgoð his ealde fæsten on þám Norþdǽlum, and getrymede micle, and orcas gegaderode, and þá Eorclanstánas on his írenhelme befæste. Þá fór Féanor mid his seofon sunum and micelre fierde norþ 7 þá siglde on Teleriscum scipum to þám Weststrandum, and þǽr forbærndon híe þá scipu ond aswicon hiera geféran þe on lást síðodon.

Hér gefeaht Féanores fierd wip þám orcum 7 sige námon 7 þá orcas geflíemdon oþ Angband (þæt is Irenhelle); ac Goðmog, Morgoðes þegn, ofslóh Féanor, and Mægdros gewéold siþþan Féanores folc. Þis gefeoht hátte Tungolgúð.

2999: Here Morgoth destroyed the Trees and fled away, and carried with him the gems of the Elves and the Arclenstones. After that the Noldor forsook their allegiance, and went into exile in foreign lands, and fought against the Teleri at Swanhaven [Quenya: Alqualondë] and gained victory and took away the ships of the Teleri.

Here was great mist and darkness in Valinor and over all Middle-earth. Meanwhile, Morgoth renewed his old fortress in the Northern Lands, and recovered his strength greatly, and gathered the Orcs and fastened the Arclenstones on his iron helmet. Then Fëanor travelled north with his seven sons and a great army and then sailed on the Telerian ships to the West Shores, and there they burned the ships and abandoned their companions who followed.

Here Fëanor's army fought against the Orcs and gained victory and put them to flight till Angband (that is 'Iron Hell'); but Gothmog, the servant of Morgoth, slew Fëanor, and after that Maedhros ruled Fëanor's people. This battle is called the Battle-under-Stars [Sindarin: Dagor-nuin-Giliath].
