1,Downtempo
Downtempo isn't dance music, it is listening music. For 40 years it has dedicated itself to the exploration of new audio textures and undiscovered sonic soundscapes, often inventing whole instruments and sound kaleidoscopes in its push for novelty. Because of this, the other genres have made a habit of consistently and constantly raiding the atmospheric mood and ambience of Downtempo to employ in their own eclectic styles. But though it doesn't actively seek the spotlight as much as the others, Downtempo will remain as the genre that was here first and will probably be here at the end, since it is the only one driven solely by an insatiable desire for innovation.
2,Trip-hop
Everywhere else it's just seen as another welcome addition to the post-hip hop, downtempo breakbeat movement. Everything ambienty and jazzy included. Only this is reeeeeeeaaaaaalllly slooooooooooowww, with female vocals that don't sing insomuch as they just droll around like they quaffed too many quaaludes. Bristol seems to churn out artists the way Seattle churns out grunge bands. I don't find it as fun as the others, though. Leave it to the brits to dullify yet another promising strain of music.
3,Downbeat
Yet another sub-tempo genre. Stuff that's not cool cat daddy-o or saxaphoney enough for Acid Jazz, yet not drearily drolling enough (nor from Bristol) to be Trip Hop. This was huge in the mid 90s. And then it tapered off, like most things do. I don't even know if it's called Downbeat or not. But I'm calling it here, because it has to fit somewhere, and putting the music in either of the other genres is just wrong. It's funny how I'll get emails about this now; half of them saying I'm being way too scrutinizing and specific, and the other half complaining that I'm not being specific enough because I missed Ambient Down Dub Hopcore. Sheesh.--待求证
