The history of Gakushuin Women’s College dates back to 1885, when the school was first built as a place to educate girls of the nobility. Now, it strives to nurture female graduates capable of being successful in the global arena, meeting the needs of modern society while still holding dear the history, culture and spirit of Gakushuin. From an academic approach of “learning not just for the sake of learning, but realizing the importance and value of what is learnt”, the university offers a diverse curriculum, allowing students to learn about Japan and the rest of the world through international cooperative research and training around the globe, as well as experiencing the traditions and culture of Japan through courses in flower arrangement, calligraphy, tea ceremony, incense burning and studies in usages and practices of the ancient court and military households (Yuusoku Kojitsu).
