The university is known for its innovative and ground-breaking research. It offers excellent facilities for starting your scientific career. When it comes to research and providing education, Wageningen enjoys an outstanding international reputation. The university is currently listed in the top six of most important citation indexes in its research domains (Health, Lifestyle, and Living conditions/ Nutrition and food production/ Habitats).

As a PhD candidate at the university, you will develop knowledge that serves mankind and society at large. Research is done in the fields of various natural and social sciences. Topical themes include safe and healthy food, lifestyle and living conditions, climate change, nature and biodiversity, sustainable fishery and agricultural systems and the search for alternative sources of energy.

Research assistants

Research assistants are PhDs who are temporarily employed at Wageningen for a period of four years. In the Netherlands they were formerly known as AIO or OIO. As a research assistant you will have all the benefits that a job at the university offers, such as a competitive salary, excellent working facilities and a fair amount of leave days.

Sandwich PhD candidates

Sandwich PhD candidates are international PhD candidates who only spend part of their time at Wageningen. As a sandwich PhD candidate you will not be employed by the university. You will have a grant and you will generally only spend the initial and last six to eight months of the four-year PhD programme in Wageningen. In the intermediate period you will conduct your research in your country of origin. You will need to have the support of both your home institute and supervisor at the university before you can start your PhD programme.

Guest PhD candidates

Guest PhD candidates conduct research at the university but are not employed by Wageningen. As a guest PhD candidate you are required to pay tuition fees and departmental fees. If you apply for a guest PhD position at Wageningen, you must be able demonstrate at an early stage of the application procedure that you have secured appropriate financial support as well as commitment from the relevant department or institute at the university.

External PhD candidates

External PhD candidates are not employed by the university. As an external PhD candidate you conduct or have conducted your research at an institute outside the university, but you do receive guidance from a supervisor in Wageningen. You will not be required to pay fees and are not entitled to an education budget. If you choose to participate in an education programme, the programme should paid for by your PhD sponsor.

Staff PhD candidates

Sometimes employees of the university are given the opportunity to conduct PhD research. As a staff PhD candidate you are not required to pay tuition fees or departmental fees and do not have to register at the Student Service Centre.

Step 1: Orientation Before applying for a PhD position at the university, it is important that you have thoroughly read the information about the PhD programme on this website.

Step 2: Application

Research assistants and staff PhD candidates are recruited via vacancy announcements onAcademic Transfer. If you are not employed by the university you start by selecting aGraduate Schoolof Wageningen in which research programme your intended PhD research fits. Accordingly you submit an application to that graduate school which includes:

Cover letter describing your motivation to apply.

Preliminary research proposal (approximately two pages), containing:

problem definition

research questions

proposed methodology linked to the research questions

up-to-date literature references

References from at least two supervisors or professors. The references must contain information regarding your performance during the Master programme and should contain a reflection on your capacity to finish a PhD in the area of application.

Curriculum Vitae, including information on education, research experience and, if applicable, list of publications.

If you are not Dutch, from a non-Anglophone country and you have not completed your higher education with English as the language of instruction, you have to submit an internationally recognised Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language. See theEnglish language requirementsfor more information.

Information on funding. The university and the Graduate Schools will usually not assist in finding funding sources. There is a much higher chance of being accepted if funding is secured.

For Sandwich PhD candidates: proof of commitment from the home institute

Step 3: Evaluation

After you have submitted an application, the graduate school will evaluate your qualifications and will check whether the proposal fits within its research programme. If the proposal meets the graduate school's conditions they will forward it to a prospective supervisor for further evaluation. Applications will be evaluated using to the following criteria:

Education level (at least at MSc)

Experience as an independent researcher

The publications already published

The scientific quality of the preliminary proposal

The originality of the preliminary proposal

The strategic fitting of research topic in the area of interest of the supervisor and in the research field of supervisor's research group

The capacity and expertise that the graduate school and research group have available

Fluency in English

The available funding

For Sandwich PhD candidates the university will also evaluate:

Financial support from the home institute

Academic supervision at the home institute

The curriculum vitae of the supervisor in the home country

If the supervisor accepts a proposal, you can continue to the steps outlined in thetimetable. Receiving a response may take some weeks as Wageningen receives many PhD applications.
