In Berlin, fire gets Germany’s parliament building, the Reichstag. The Nazis blame the Communist and use the fire to justify suspending civil liberties, setting up a dictatorship under Adolf Hitler.

That happens after an American-led coalition drives Iraqi forces out of neighboring Kuwait.Iraq’s leader Saddam Hussein remains in power until a U.S.-led invasion in 2003 topples his regime.
