本周CHS的主题「Embodiment」，materials以body的讨论为主。

NO.1 Howson Alexandra: The body in Society

阅读感受：🌟🌟🌟

- Body was firstly be ingored in sociology research.

- Cartesian Mind&Body Theory

kind of *Dualism*, but is the basis of western epistemology

- Growing interests in Body

• demographic changes: have to deal with more aging bodies.
• modern/post-modern society: consciousness&anxieties about bodies.
• Technology: means we can *manipulate* our bodies.

- Michel Foucault:

cannot take our body *granted*

- *Feminism* and *Body*

• womens bodies: be objected; oppresion of women; tools/commercial use;

- Body in Modern Society

• a *reference point* in a world of flux and *epitome* of the same flux
• is both a *knowable anatomical* object and a *socially constructed* entity

- Two different views:

① Naturalistic Constructed:

• *Tacitly accepts* body = biological entity
• stress on *Ontological*: distiction between *body&mind*
• how *Social/Political* context impinge body.

② Socially Constructed:

• how body and its significance *change* over time/culture
• how *IDEAS* about body are socially constructed

- Human body Summary

• is not a *natural entity* but a *product* made by *historical context* and *social relations*
• *target* of *political control*,*rationalization* and *discipline*
• forms the basis of *social experience and action*

蛮有用的，有一些观点很有启发性。大概地叙述了「身体」是如何从笛卡尔时代的单纯「物理存在」，与思想独立的「客体」演变成了现在被认为的「意志载体」和「意志统治的目标」。促成这种观念演变的力量，女性主义是不可缺少的一环。正是女性主义认为女性的身体被「物化、压迫、利用」的观点促使人们思考身体是如何被社会和历史语境改变，并且又如何反过来影响社会和历史的。

阅读的过程中感觉到人类发展就好像起伏的圆圈曲线，从一开始的敬重身体认为身体是「灵魂」载体到笛卡尔认为身体在意识之后，再到现在认为身体本身就是意志和社会的产物的观念，起伏变化。但是不知道是我自己阅读水平烂还是作者确实说了很多废话，整理读书笔记的时候发现每隔那么几段就来一次body is not a physical exsit but a product/socially constructed，应该是按照时间线叙述但是时间线索也不是非常明确。

但是启发了我一些别的想法：

1. 对后人类的身体探讨：作者讲到身体是一个*product*，是可以被历史语境和社会关系塑造的，那么*post human*的身体会被技术和社会变化塑造成什么样子呢？构想后人类的身体变化和形态应该是一个有意思的话题。或许某些器官会消失？或许会成为半机械人？或许语言会由于小语种的灭绝、对效率的追求而变化？（好，打算在啃一次特德姜的你一生的故事了）
2. 对于身体和审美统治的问题：身体这个话题太好和女性主义一起讲了，对身体的探索和发掘应该就是女性主义一个重要的命题。我们对于身体的审美是如何被塑造的？这种被塑造的审美是怎么影响女性的身体/如果通过审美统治来统治女性的身体进而统治她们的思想？这个问题和作者之前的举例一样，如果一个人去做plastic surgery，这种行为是*pandering to social definition*还是在*control one's life*？这种行为是一种*demeaning*还是一种*empowering*？这个问题还可以衍生到世界未解之谜：当女性追求*美丽*时，她的行为意味着一种*独立*/*控制身体*还是一种对于审美体系的*妥协*呢？如果一个人坚持认为一种行为是*empower herself*，那么还能否认为他的行为是融于审美统治之中呢？
