Octopus - A future organisation?
For several years I have worked with the fantastic plastics industry. And I really like sea food as they often contain micro plastics (trying to be ironic).
Recently I learned to cook octopus. It is a very intelligent animal with great capability of learning. It has both short term and long term memories. It can rapidly alter its shape and color. It has strategic and tactical adaptation to the environment*. They are even able to predict football games!
The decision making mechanism with Octopus is amazing. All of its body can think and react. But 2/3 of its nerve system is in the arms or tenacles, which can make local decisions without the need to wait for escalation of every signal to its brain.
Some future organization may look like an octopus. The decision making is not at the geographical clusters, but the virtual clusters through some network of its internal cells. One CEO with his GLT (Global Leadership Team) would always have a limited attention span in its company. Dinosours distinguished perhaps because the brain is too far from its foot.
But why it is us the human being dominating the earth instead of the octopus? I’m sure many of us are not as smart as an octopus.
Perhaps we learned to collaborate and octpous don’t. So an octopus-like organization should never stop the collaboration externally to sustain its survivorship.

*Quote from Wikipedia:
Strategies to defend themselves against predators include the expulsion of ink, the use of camouflage and threat displays, their abilities to jet quickly through the water and hide, and even through deceit.
