President Obama will go to the Capitol today for a final personal appeal to congressional Democrats to support the health care reform bill. Members of the Republican Party continue to oppose the bill. House Republican leader John Boehner said the bill would mean higher taxes and too much government interference in health care decisions. Mr. Obama’s administration is pushing hard for public support to convince Congress to approve the legislation. At a gathering outside Washington on Friday Mr. Obama said a yes vote on health care reform would be a victory for the American people. He’s been working to win the votes of House members who say they have not made the decision about the bill.
The United States will permit India to question a Pakistani-American who has admitted to helping plan the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai. Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake told reporters in New Delhi that Indian investigators will be able to question David Headley. But he said Headley will not be sent to India. Mr. Blake did not rule out sending Headley to India at a future date if new charges are brought against him. Headley admitted guilt in an American federal court on Thursday. He is charged with spying on targets in India’s financial center for more than two years before the attacks. One hundred sixty six people died in the attacks.
