市面辅导材料和College Board官方试题的区别

中国SAT辅导培训的书籍铺天盖地，良莠不齐，几乎每一本我看过的书都有些问题。比如清华大学出版社的《新SAT- Evidence-based Reading》，第六页的例子：
The coming decades will likely see more intense clustering of jobs, innovation, and productivity in a smaller number of bigger cities and city-regions. Some regions could end up bloated beyond the capacity of their infrastructure, while others struggle, their promise stymied by inadequate human or other resources.
As underlined, “bloated” mostly nearly means:
A.Swollen
B.Outrageous
C.Pampered
D.Expanded
E.Limited
书中给出答案是D, 并解释说- ”to answer this question, students need to know the meaning of the asked word as well as those of the words in the answer choices.” （要回答这个问题，学生应该知道画线单词和其他单词的含义）
我选择A，swollen。看看牛津英语字典，bloated的英文解释， swollen with liquid, air or gas. Swollen 也可以用来形容城市、人口或组织。The population is swollen to twice of its original size.
我不选择D是因为expanded，给人感觉是向外扩张，市区吞占农村。大城市的扩张可以是这种情况，但世界大城市的问题更多是有限的空间塞进更多的人口，而不是指城市平面扩张。而且，原文作者选择bloated这个词，没用expanded, 就是表达上的细腻区别。
我不会说本书作者错误。因为expanded一词能否说的通？可以，如果一个人理解为城市的平面扩张，那么也可以接受。事实上，当我看到做选择时，也在两个词之间考虑了片刻。
不过，本书作者犯下和很多辅导材料作者类似的错误，即编写的题目远离美国官方College Board的宗旨。 官方SAT试题，每一道题都有一个清晰的答案，而不是两个看似差不多的答案。如果你觉得差不多，那是因为你自己对英语的理解程度有问题，而不是出题者犯了错误。
所以我一再强调，学生做题一定用官方题目，而不要选择什么辅导机构的模拟试题。像美国Kaplan, Princeton Review, Barron，McGraw等培训机构的书，都存在问题。
可惜，如同很多事情一样，好的建议常常被搁置。学生和家长认为不买某某著名机构的书，就落后其他人。殊不知，他们的做法好一点是无用功，不好反而丢分。
