Continental shift: Latin American art
The biggest exploration of the region's art ever held in America opened this week. More than 1,100 artists from 45 Latin American countries are taking part in abstract and conceptual-art exhibitions, films, concerts and performances across 70 cultural institutions throughout Southern California. Backed by the Getty Foundation, "Pacific Standard Time LA/LA" will range from the pre-Hispanic to the modern day, focusing particularly on the issues of borders, diaspora and displacement; on definitions of identity; on art and activism; and on cultural criticisms of globalisation. "PST LA/LA" will cost the Getty and its partner institutions an estimated $35m. Its effects are likely to be far-reaching, as a growing number of the shows are getting signed up by other institutions on both sides of the American border, and participating artists are being taken up by commercial galleries who have been impressed by the turnout.
