Billy Lynn's long halftime walk⭐️⭐️⭐️
I do love and respect Ang Lee, no doubt he is one of the most talented and brilliant Asian director in the history. But for his latest movie adapted from Ben Fountain's fiction, is sort of a letdown. After its debut in US, many Americans think it's not that good as what they had expected, so do I. Now, I'm 100% honest with you, the movie is not about anti-war, but about how a 19-year-old grows up and choose the life he wants, which inspires people to be ME. It mainly tells a bravo squad made the rounds back to US and being treated like heroes, which they are not comfortable with( A clip of Billy' combat with enemies back in Iraq was uploaded to Internet), culminating at the contrast between the combat in Iraq in flashbacks and halftime show of a football game. I'm not gonna lie the extravaganza show blew me away and the numbness and sad look on their face made me overwhelming sad and sorry for them. Also, Joe Alwyn made a good debut performance, he didn't overact it and his emotions were right on point. But the story was not like finished yet when it came to an end, which drove me nuts. And it's a pretty simple story without ups and downs. Comparing with other works of Ang Lee, this one is not good enough and in pale comparisons with them.
I will give it 7 out of 10 stars, but I will go see this movie again, trying to dig out more hidden info underneath. To sum up, not as good as what I expected, but it's very Ang Lee( who is good at telling stories slowly but emotionally).
Oh, almost forgot to mention I watched an interview about Ang Lee last night. Blown away by his wisdom and modesty even he is on the peak of his career. The thing that impress me most is Ang Lee' complicated personality. He looks like a man with few words, never picks a fight with people, and likes 中庸(The doctrine of mean). But for his career, he never stops trying something new that is impossible for others, and he really made it. No matter it's about the technical advancements or the movie content itself, he always blown us away making something revolutionary.
