阅读记-The Night Circus 3
"I never once told Isobel that I loved her," Marco says. "I was young and I was desperately lonely, and I should not have let her think I felt more strongly than I did, but what I felt for her is nothing compared to what I feel for you. This is not a tactic to deceive you; do you think me that cruel?" P402.
"Love is fickle and fleeting," Tsukiko continues. "it is rarely a solid foundation for decisions to be made upon, in any game." P389.
When I read what Tsukiko said, I was impressed by her skills manipulating others' mind, and how easy is it to destroy trust, and how blind may people be when they are in love. But when I saw what Marco says once he realised that Celia is trying to avoid getting in touch, I'm even more impressed, not by his touching words, nor their true love, but by the fact that one can easily deny the other's effort by saying "I never said I loved her". No wonder why all the girls keep on asking their partners "do you love me". That's funny, to be fair he's honest. And yes loneliness explains a lot, but somewhat absurd if thinking of Isobel.
