Where can I buy small cacti and succulents in the city? self.toronto
Submitted 9 months ago by dougtoChurch and Wellesley
I'm looking to build a small tabletop terrarium and I want to buy desktop-sized cacti and succulents. Does anybody have any idea where I could get some for cheap? I heard Walmart and Ikea carry them but I have no idea. Anywhere downtown would be great given that I would have to carry the plants by transit. Thanks!

Picked up some small cacti at Sheridan today! They have a pretty decent selection.

Lots of nurseries and even Home Depot have them... But... Terrariums really aren't the best for cacti and succulents (they keep the air too humid, and don't have drainage holes) and actually cacti and succulents need to be in separate pots for success over the medium term.

yup, the best are tropical plants like ferns or philodendrons. the doctor/amateur botanist (nathaniel ward) who discovered you could grow plants in a closed system actually had a fern sprout in a soil sample and just sort of let it grow in the bottle to see how long it would last. i made a plexiglass terrarium/wardian case with a fern that lasted about 2 years on 2-3 drops of water, until i moved somewhere with bad natural light and it died.

There is a corner store on Bloor between Ossington and Dufferin, just west of the Scotiabank. They have an amazing selection and great prices but you need to repot into well draining soil immediately. In fact I have a hard time understanding how their plants look so good considering the wet soil they're sitting in.

take a peek at your closest corner store/fruit stand. Theres a bunch on Bloor that have small plant sections, with mostly cacti and succulents. seems to be the same way across most of the city.

Go to Dynasty on Queen West, at Dovercourt. They have awesome unique plants that would be great on a desk or whatever. Killer store.

Great place and they will have what you need. Lots of terrariums already premade too.

There's a bunch at the Metro on Bloor near Spadina.
And yes, Ikea has them too, though not a particularly large selection.

their website advertises bouquets but if you walk in store they are very helpful and have a variety of plants (including succulents and cacti)
