Last week, my friend told me that this movie is well worth watching, and it changed her view over Japan during the Second World War. So I watched this movie yesterday.
"Grave of Fire Flies" is generally thought directed by Miyazaki Hayao, but it is actually directed by his coworker Isao Takahata. The movie is about two children's life during the Second World War, their father is naval officer, and their family was once very rich. When Japan was gradually defeated, their family could not escape the unlucky fate, their mother was killed by a air raid and their father also died. The brother was only about 15 years old, but he has to take care of his young sister. However, because of the pressure of the war, every family are struggling in poverty, no adults want to help them, the two kids are walking towards death.
                
                
                
                
One thing that touch me is the fruit candy. This is the thing that prove they used to be rich, and this is one thing that brings them happiness and hope. It help the little sister to persist when they lose their parents and have little life supports. They only have one box of fruit candy left, and the amount gradually decrease, finally they have to pour water into the candy box to make sweat drink. It is just like their possibility of living, disappearing day by day.
                
                
It is really touching that the two children can still find their happiness in such a tough situation. The movie have a lot of scenes of the fire flies. The two children caught the fire flies and put them in to their shelter to bring light. The life of fire flies is extremely short, the second day, almost all of the fire flies died.
The war is pushing everyone to expose their negative side of life. The children's relative gradually changed her attitude towards the children and occupied their property. Even the boy started stealing since he had no life supports.
One thing that I can not understand is that why the boy do not wage, since he is so healthy and full of energy. Finally his sister died because of the lack of nutrition. If he started working, he would be able to buy food for his sister.
The director didn't told the audience the reason of the boy's death. Maybe he has lost his reason of life? Maybe he don't have any food to eat? No matter what the reason is, his death is not strange, this is the fate of all the orphans at that period.
