What is Pinyin?
Pinyin is the mark if phonetic for Chinese characters. It’s made ofthree parts: initials, finals and tones. For example, nǐhǎo, xìexie, zàijìan.
After this class, we should be able to pronounce every single word.
How do we learn pinyin?
We divide our pinyin class into 10 parts.
In the first two parts, we learn to recognize all the initials, finalsand tones.
The fourth 音节syllables 声母initials 韵母 finals 声调tones
1. 音节 syllables
The basic Chinese word is monosyllable which consists of a consonant anda vowel. There
are about 402 such units.
这是说，基础的汉语词汇一般为单音节词，由一个声母与一个韵母结合发声。一共有差不多402个这样的音节组合。
2. 声母 initials
In the pinyin system, consonants are called “initials” because theyusually begin with a syllable. Chinese initials cannot be pronounced withoutfinals. There are 21 such initials.
在汉语拼音系统中，声母发起一个音节。汉语的声母不能单独发音，必须与韵母拼读才能发音。一共有21个声母。
声母 initials：b p m f d t n l g k h
3. 韵母 finals
In the pinyin system, finals end with syllables of sound. There are 39such finals.
在汉语拼音系统中，音节以韵母结尾，一共有39个韵母。
韵母 finals：a o e i u v ai ei ao ou
“ai ei ao ou ”
有些外国学生会发成“a-i e-i a-o o-u”，初学者在书写的时候需要故意强调韵母部分，比如可以把ai 中的a 写大一点，i 写小一点，要自然地过渡。
4. 声调 tones
Tones are an important part of the meaning of words.
English is an intonation language. The pitch at the end of a sentenceindicates mood. For example, pitch typically rises at the end of a question.Like: can you help me?
Chinese is a tone language. The tone of each sound differentiatesmeaning. In Common Speech( Putonghua), there are four tones plus a neutraltone.

英语是一种有语调的语言：句尾的调高表示语气，由此表明话语的情绪。
汉语是一种有声调的语言：声调有区别语义的作用。普通话有4个基本声调和一个轻声。
