1. 宇宙起源
in the beginning was Te Kore, the Nothing.
and from Te Kore came Te Po, the night.
In that impenetrable darkness Rangi( the Sky Father) lay in arms of Papa(the Earth Mother).
the Gods, who were their children, crawled through the narrow space between their clinging bodies.
they longed for freedom, for wind blowing over sharp hill tops and deep valleys, and light to warm their pale bodies.
Tane forced apart the primal parents and darkness was manifest, so was the light came.
Papa's tears for her husband became pools and streams across her body.
Tane brought his children-- tress. he planted them upsidedown.
There was no space for his other children-- birds and insects.
2. 诸神
each had a duty to perform
`Rongo-ma-tane preserved the fertility of growing things of earth
`Haumia-tiketike tended the humble fernroot
`Tu-matauenga was the god of war
`Tangaroa controlled restless waves, also the only one of 70 brothers left the placid shelter of mother to follow their father
`Tawhiri-matea was the god of wind blow between earth and sky
3. 夜空与星
Tane took sun and moon for his father as a gift.
still not satisfied, he went to Uru ask shining lights to fasten on the mantle of the sky. Uru gave his sons--the shining ones.
five most shinings were displaced as a cross on the breast of Rangi. the others were the Milky Way.
sometimes Uru's children tumble and fall swiftly towards the earth, but for the most part they remain like fireflies on the mantle of the night sky.
4. 死亡
death are Whiro's gift to men
5.女性
Rangi and Papa, the primal parents of earth and sky were all male gods, instinct with the ira atua(divine element), and were incapable of producing the ira tangata(human element) which could only emerge from wha(female element).
Tane took Papa's(her) advice, on arrival at Kurawaka beach he fashioned an image of earth, to be the first woman, Hine-ahu-one, assisted by his brother gods.
the mating of the first woman with a god result in the birth of a daughter, Hine-i-tauira. later children of Hine-ahu-one included personifications of hot springs, clouds and lightning.
6. 阴阳与冥后
Tane married his own daughter Hine-titama( girl of the Dawn)/Hine-i-tauria.
after knowing the truth,
Hine-titama questioned the reason and truth.
Tane: where will you go? My presence is everywhere in this world of light. u cannot escape me.
Hine-titama: I shall not remain in your world of light. My grandmother Papa will shelter me in the depths of her body. the path of Taheke-roa to the underworld shall be laid down for all time. From the Muri-wai-roa I shall look up to you and your offspring moving in the world. Remain, Tane, to pull up our offspring today, while I go below to drag them down to night.
When she took her place in the world of shadows her name was changed to Hine-nui-te-po -- the great woman of light, or death.
she is represented as the dread figure of night swallowing mankind but in the creation legends, she is a pathetic and yet beneficent personage, devoted to the welfare of her children.
7. 返魂
there are several strange tales of living men and women went to rescue loved ones form a premature death.
8. 驯日
Maui tames the sun
9. 月姬
Rona, the woman in the moon
