Following Pearl Harbor, a wave of anti-Japanese feeling swept through the United States. Glenn Gray, who served in the American army from1941 to1945, recounted the following incident:"When a Japanese soldier was flushed from his hiding place, the unit was resting and joking. But they seized their rifles and began using him as a live target while he dashed frantically around the clearing in search of safety. The soldiers found his movements uproariously funny, and were prevented by their laughter from making an early end of the unfortunate man. Finally, they succeeded in killing him, and the incident cheered the whole platoon."
A popular wartime saying in the United States was"the only good Jap is a dead Jap". In1943, the United States Marine monthly magazine ran a photograph of Japanese corpses on Guadalcanal* with a heading reading:"Good Japs".

During the Zulu War of 1879, a British officer, Smith-Dorrien, one day went out inspecting the country alone, and had got several miles from camp when he was suddenly attacked by a body of Zulus. He set spurs to his horse, and was soon galloping away, with the enemy after him.
After riding some distance, he came upon an officer on foot, and allowed him to get on the horse. When the officer had mounted the horse straightway bolted, leaving Smith-Dorrien behind to the mercy of the fast approaching enemy. Nothing daunted, he sprinted ahead, and it was not in vain that he had taken many prizes in his younger days for running. He kept ahead for a couple of miles, with the Zulus, who were known to be swift runners, close upon his heels, until at last he spurted into camp and safety.
