Milgram's obedience study is timeless in the sense that it is explicitly connected to a historical event whose political relevance was still current - the Holocaust.
However, fifty years after the obedience study, we still see that people are willing to inflict pain or even death on others.
What makes social psychology such an awkward discipline is its lack of cumulative, non-trivial knowledge and the substantial consensus among its contributors.
Social psychologists should perhaps stop their debate over whether or not obedience is truly the underlying mechanism of holocausts, and start proposing some coherent theories that might help prevent these catastrophic events.
