《看见-The Seen》
Max: Before finishing reading this book, I am struggling about how to title it in English. Occasionally, I was reminded of that the small people and the big world that you see actually are some reflections of your mind, so I decided to title Chai's book as <The Seen>.
I had done some jobs of translating abroad, but never got one chance to experience the fun and the beauty of them.
But now, I really do.
序言 Preface
Ten year ago, when Chen asked about what I would really concern about if I make news, my answer was the people in every single incident who I actually care, however, the answer still stay the same until today.
Those words I said is like a common sense, but it is found so difficult when I get into the job.
"human factor" is always being ignored intentionally or unintentionally, "the human" itself is always obstructed by ignorant and prejudice.
We all are conceptualized and patterned. All these precious thoughts are buried under the unconsciousness, which seems so deep that there is nothing, nobody, even ourselves can not be seen by the eyeballs.
If one truly want to see things around you, one has to open the eyes from ignorant. How to open the eyes is the most difficult part for yourself. Why? Because the ignorant is myself, which looks like you already built a dam that is isolating you from the truth in your beating heart.
In this book, I only chose to report the person who leaves me some strong impression about the meaning of our lives. I feel so lucky to meet them due to my work. They are like still going on in my body, from the dam of my heart to the surface, my preconceived ideas and obstinate way of thinking are flushed by those people and those stories again and again.
Eventually, the ideas and the thoughts are shaking, then they disintegrating with nothing left behind.
That kind of shaking and disintegrating means dangerous, since it tells you that the mind itself means intranquil.
I try to write all those mistakes I had made, the answers I overturned, the questions I am having, and the corrections I will do. I just want to be honest to myself. One great country consists of many individuals, a individual also is made up by the people around him.
You have to know how to report yourself, then you will know how to report a nation truthfully.
I started this book after Chen passed away, but this is not for him, not for mourning him as well. Also he did not want me to do this.
He once said,
death is not horrible thing, the ignorant is. What he always expects is that I can follow the way which he had made.
Like a leaf, it tries its best to stretch hard from the pain of death.
Like a man, one should struggle to obtain freedom from his ignorant, which is the true meaning of life.
Life is short, ten years has passed, as what he said,
Never forget why we start our journey before you are going too far.
