Zhao Yuqiang Solo Exhibition
玉强的人,单纯厚实,质如“烩面”,地道之极;玉强的画,身心驰骋,神同“摇滚”,直达胸臆。
Yuqiang is a simple man. Just like the food "Huimian", typical and pure. And his paintings are mind irrigating, which make you grow wings like rock n roll music.
他读老庄阅圣经查找生命根源,看周易念禅宗编辑内心图腾,弹吉它玩摇滚壮行自我生活,去红尘入绘画企图世事清净。画画成为玉强的最后选择。
He reads the works of Laocius and Chuangcius in order to search for the origin of life, and he reads Zhou Yi (The Book of Changes) to quiet his mind and build his spiritual totem. He plays electric guitars to practise his patience and widens his journey, and he paints to lose his ordinary form to find his inner peace. And painting becomes his choose for life.
最近几年留心玉强的画,“城市”是他的主题——城市张扬的工业文明、信息时代以及它们带来的冷漠、焦虑、困惑、失意等心灵障碍,然而他的“城市”已化为心意纵横的时空抽象,富有特殊的文化质量,他的“城市”连接“道冲”、“万宗”、“大吉”、“十戒”、“挫锐”、“观卦”、“大自在”、“启示”等等内在觉悟,神秘而具有批判意识。他身在城市,心穿旷野,自定法度,笔墨酣畅,画作不拘一格,解构并重建,编织绘画独特语境,开垦个人精神深度。
If attention is paid to his works, you will find that the cities are his main theme. The grande industrial civilizations of cities and the information age bring the feelings of detachment, anxiety, confusion and lost. And his cities has already become a time space abstraction of mind, and embodies great cultural mass. His cities in connection with his inner awareness such as "Dao Chong" (within Taoism), "Wan Zong" (the origin of all) "Shi Jie" (ten commandments) "Cuo Rui" (practise to stay in the doctrine of mean) "Guan Gua" (read the divination), "Da Zi Zai" (the greater freedom) and "Apocalypse", is mysterious and of criticism. He's bodies is in the city while his mind wonders in the great wilderness, staying with his moral standard, quick with his brush and not restrained to any singular form. He de-constructs and rebuilds, to weave a very peculiar language of art, to the reclamation of his inner kingdom.
“符号”,在当代艺术中诡异多端,而自我锤炼且唤醒个人意识和社会集体认知情感的特殊符号才有语言特质和思想感召力,当然它必须深入和融化在你的思维方式和艺术的方法之中。赵玉强的个人“符号”中肯诚实、经过心灵洗涤,他的画面构成、绘画方法和用笔策略,形成个人面貌,独自一体,作品中:工业感色调、“暴雨”冲刷的痕迹、频繁的旋线、虚拟的白色块、飞转的“齿轮”、孤零的“冒钉”、彻底的直线、还有“圆圈和叉”组成的神秘以及建筑的形状、镶嵌的音乐,相互交融,聚合嬗变,鬼使神差,心法自然。
Symbols are mischievous within the boundaries of contemporary art. And only those because of which the self awareness in individualism and cognition of public attention is realized are of linguistic characteristics and mental appeal. Of course it has to melt deeply inside your mentality and artistic way. Zhao Yuqiang's personal symbols are potent and keen. It has been washed by heart and, the composition, artistic language and strategy of painting formed a personal appeal, and is abusolutely original. Within his work, the industrial colors, the vestiges of storm wash, repeatation of the twisting lines, virtual white block, rotating gears, lonesome rivets, total straight lines, the symbols made of circles and crosses, and mysterious shapes of architecture, embedded music, all swirling and twisting, melting into each other, changing constantly, which is really peculiar and astonishing.
玉强作品颇有“草图”意识,他自己也曾说过:“我把在画草图时的无目的性、随意性和自由放松状态用在了创作手法的表现上,其效果令我振奋。” “草图”,本质上是“‘意’涂”,“想法”直泄于画布,不修边幅,无为而治。
Zhao Yuqiang's works is full of "draftness". He once said himself, I once combines the un-intentionism, spontaneous, and freedom when making a draft into my way of expression, and its result is positively exciting. Drafting, means brush at will, and one's will is directly displayed on the canvas, away from pedantic traditions and to govern by doing nothing that goes against nature.
就作画的意图而言,玉强的画颇有神秘主义色彩,物我两忘,随性天意。他“编撰”的空间意象,可谓“外事造化,中得心源”。
When it comes to the meaning of his painting, Yuqiang's works is mysterious and illogical. Its work forgets both outside things and his inner self, and the impression his works gives is that of "Waishi Zaohua, Zhong De Xinyuan" (rather than copying the techniques of the masters, one should follow his instincts and nature sense).
玉强的作品,在三十多年中国当代艺术演变中,另辟蹊径,着意扑捉主观精神和“城市”问题相融合的内心情愫,质疑和批判城市盲目扩张及其携带的精神垃圾于不动声色,问鼎传统文化精神以助自我能量,“稀释”当下社会顽疾。
Yuqiang's work finds a scarcely walked road during the 30 years changing course of Chinese contemporary art. It emphasizes on capturing the feelings when merging of subjective spirit and cities, and questions and criticizes quietly about the blind expansion of cities and the spiritual garbage it carries with it. It traces back to the traditional cultural spirit to help our personal energy, to dilute the current social problems.
郑州当代艺术的现状令人堪忧,在此举办赵玉强作品展也算期待社会各界有心关注当代文化建设的团体机构发现并挖掘当代艺术家对河南文化的贡献,使之变成“一日三餐”;巴尼尼当代艺术咖啡馆正在尝试,她身处街区倡导当代生活,赵玉强作品展是个开端。
The condition of contemporary art in Zhengzhou is grim, and this exhibition of Zhao Yuqiang calls for the public attention for contemporary culture construction, and for the relating organizations or individuals to seek the contribution of Henan local artists to the culture of Henan, and make it bread and butter for more people. Bernini Contemporary Cafe is trying, it initiates contemporary living style within the cityscape, and Zhao's solo exhibition is just a beginning.
玉强和他的画都有股心劲儿颇似他的名字——“玉”强,因此我为展览写了副对联:
意涂意在意自由,意真意切意空灵;玉纯玉绵玉无华,玉强玉澈玉深情;前后混搭:玉意勃发。
Both Yuqiang's name and his works are similar, Yu (Jade) Qiang (tough), hence i wrote a couplet for this exhibition:
Meaningful painting means freedom, meaning is truthful and vivid and unpredictable, Jade is pure and pretty and plain, the jade is clear and tough and full of love. The story is untold.

Zhao Yuqiang's works is full of "draftness".
