Nicolas Collins 来自美国的纽约，电子音乐作曲家。早年跟随Alvin Lucier学习。他是现场演出中使用微电脑的先驱，同时精于扩展性地使用“家用”类电子电路、收音机、各种电子发生物来进行音乐表演。他的个人及所参加的音乐团体在欧洲、日本和美国演出超过300场。

这次来到BM Space，Nic为我们带来了题为“Hardware Hacking ”工作坊。工作坊期间，通过对日常民用电子电路的“破解”“改制”，使参与者能够简单且目标明确地制作个人化的电子乐器。
同时，Nic也将在工作坊中进行小型的表演。
本次工作坊适合音乐家、对电子音乐感兴趣的艺术家以及新媒体背景的艺术家和艺术学生。
由于本次工作坊主办方将向每个学员提供基本的电子耗材，所以每位学员收费人民币30元。
学员所需自带物品
* 一个工作良好便携式的收音机。
该收音机必须是干电池供电。也不要那种带有闹钟功能和内置可充电电池的收音机。
该收音机最好够便宜，便宜到如果你把他弄坏了也不心疼。
该收音机需有调幅（AM）频段，如果兼有调频（FM）频段也可以。
该收音机应该使用模拟拨盘（指针式）来调节频段，不推荐使用数字扫描方式调节频段。
该收音机最好大一点，旧一点。大的比小的好操作，旧的比新的发出的声音会更好。
该收音机应该自带内置扬声器，而不是只有耳机插口。
供收音机使用的电池。
* 两个或两个以上发声玩具。
和收音机的要求相似，必须干电池供电，自带内置扬声器。不要太小型。
如果这个玩具拥有静音和采样（比如该玩具发出的声音是人声、动物的声音或者乐器的声音）功能那会比只有单一的“嘀”电子声音来的更加有用。
该玩具按钮和各式开关越多越好。但是不推荐音乐键盘玩具，它会限制我们改制的可能性。
近5年制造生产的玩具不在考虑范围内，因为这些玩具很难破解。去找个老式的二手货。
* 不带功放的裸露的扬声器，若干。（大小随便，这个在虬江路可以找到。）
* 三节9号干电池。
* 一小片粗糙的金属片
* 电烙铁
* 其他工具：美工刀，斜口钳
* 可选：卡带式随声听（walkman）
Nicolas Collins is from New York. A composer of mostly electronic music and former student of Alvin Lucier.
Nicolas Collins was "a pioneer in the use of microcomputers in live performance, and has made extensive use of 'home-made' electronic circuitry, radio, found sound material, and transformed musical instruments. He has presented over 300 concerts and installations in Europe, Japan, and the United States as a solo artist and as a member of various ensembles.
In 2006 Collins' book Handmade Electronic Music: The Art of Hardware Hacking was published by Routledge.
He is also the chair of the sound department of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
On 22nd Oct. Nic will bring his "Hardware Hacking Workshop" to BM Space. Nic will show us how to make a musical instrument based on "home made" circuitry by our hands.
The workshop is open for everyone, specially for musician, artist who's interested in electronic music and art students with new media background.
The entry fee is 30 RMB for the electronic material what we will support you during the workshop.
Participants should bring the following supplies:
• A portable, battery-powered radio or boombox, with appropriate batteries.
Make sure it works! It should be cheap enough that you won’t be too angry if it never works again.
The AM band is more important than FM, but it doesn’t matter if the radio picks up
both. It should have analog tuning (i.e., a dial) rather than digital presets or scan
buttons. Larger radios are easier to work with than tiny ones, and older ones always
sound better than new ones. It should have a built-in speaker, not just a headphone
jack. And most importantly: IT MUST BE BATTERY POWERED! Beware: an alarm
clock radio with a built-in “backup battery” is not suitable, since it requires AC power to
function as a radio.
• ONLY IF COVERING “CIRCUIT BENDING”: Two or more battery powered, soundproducing
toys, with appropriate batteries. As with the radio, select a toy that is
expendable, not too tiny, and has a built-in speaker. A toy that makes sound is
preferable to a mute one, and sampled sounds (like voices, animal sounds or
instruments) are more useful than simple beeps. The more buttons and switches the
better, generally speaking, although musical keyboards often have limited potential for
interesting modification. Toys manufactured in the last 5 years are un-hackable –
please try to find older, used toys. And, of course: THEY MUST BE BATTERY
POWERED!
• One or more raw loudspeakers of any size (just the speaker, not enclosed in a
cabinet/box).
• Three nine-volt batteries.
• A small piece of corroded or rough-surfaced scrap metal.
• A soldering iron (lightweight, fine point).
• Hand tools (diagonal cutters, wire strippers, a knife, etc.).
• Optional: an expendable cassette player of some sort (Walkman, boombox, etc.)
