When the Moon Forgot - Original Text from Jimmy Liao
One night the moon never rises...
A lonely boy finds the fallen moon in a field. He takes it home and cares for it, slowly helping it heal. They become inseparable companions, exploring the world together both day and night. But when the world needs the moon to remeber its place in the sky, the boy must help it find its way back home.
This is an unforgettable tale of an unusual friendship by world-renowned illustrator Jimmy Liao. Gorgeous, evocative illustrations tell an imaginative story of love and courage; the world will never forget the time when the moon forgot.
One night the moon never rises.
The tides grow slow and stop.
the sea becomes a dark mirror, cold and still.。
A rocket on its way to the moon is lost in space.
No one knows where it has gone
Every channel on TV reports the moon's disappearance.
People start to wonder: Will it ever come back?
But it will be all right!
Machines grind and clank. Factories hum.
Here comes the moon-or rather, moons.
Truckloads of smiling moons roll into each sad, dark city.
Everyone gets one.
Their soft light beams and now nobody's afraid.
These moons are always full.
Every day, every hour, they smile- joyfully, tenderly.
One boy wraps his moon in a soft towel and lights a lamp to keep it warm.
He cradles the moon in his arms until it opens its eyes and begin to glow.
At first the moon rocks from side to side, like a baby too young to crawl.
Slowly, it learns to roll.
"Try floating," says the boy
The moon is scared of heights, but soon it can bob up and down. Its light changes a little, day by day.
When the sun's up, the moon sleeps.
But after dark it wants one thing: somebody to play with.
The boy and the moon hide in the closet and explore a deep, black cave. Mom never finds them.
They drift at sea for three days and nights, fighting tsunamis and sharks. They don't need Dad to save them.
"Are you the moon that fell from the sky?" the boy asks. "Don't you remember your home? Are you scared to go back by yourself?"
The moon doesn't answer. The sky gets darker.
"Don't worry," says the boy. "You can stay here with me."
When the lights go out, all over the city,
the boy and the moon creep onto the roof, surprised at the dark, peaceful world.
No one is there to watch with them.
Day after day the boy yawns and dozes.
He and the moon are too sleepy to play.
His friends move on to new games.
They leave him alone.
The boy shows his moon small fish in a pond.
They smile and swim toward the light.
The boy shows his moon fireflies, twinkling like dancing starts.
"Listen," the boy says. They both love the sound of rain beating on their umbrella.
The boy shows the moon his secret hideout. It smells of rust and roses.
When the boy talks to his father, who is far away, he tells him:" I have a real moon. I want him to stay with me forever."
Dad answers, "Be a good boy. Do what Mom says."
Every parched leaf drifts down from the big tree in the park.
Dim moons hang from dry branches, shaking in the wind.
People don't seem to love their moons anymore. They toss them away. The weather gets stranger and stranger. One warm day, the sky fills with snow.
Old moons pile up on street corners. The boy dreams that monsters are lurking down alleys and hiding in sewers.
It feels like everything in the work has been abandoned. Is there anyone who can help/
Look-the moon can still shine even when the night is darkest.
And at last the moon remembers where it came from! It's not scared anymore.
It can spin and float, high above the ground.
But..the moon can't go back to the boy's house.
The moon floats outside and whimpers. Inside, the boy sobs.
A storm blows in.
The boy sniffs and asks,
"Do you still want to hear the rain on the umbrella?" The moon nods.
Then a sudden gust of wind tosses them high over the city! The boy clings as they soar upward.
Wind roars. Rain pummels them. Then they burst through thick clouds into calm air.
Stars sparkle all around in a quiet sky. Nothing to worry about. Nothing to fear.
The moon spins gently. The boy slips into sleep.
From then on the boy's dreams are always filled with moonlight.
