The Imperial State Crown.

Anyone who has been to the jewel house of the Tower of London will know there are several crowns to be seen there, but only two of them are actually used. The St. Edward’s Crown, and this one, known as the Imperial State Crown. It’s normally keep to the Tower, but I have it here in Buckingham Palace, because I wore it this morning on the stage of the opening Parliament.

The crown as you see it now was made for Queen Victoria in 1838, but many of the individual stones have a much longer history. The oldest is probably the sapphire, which is set to been one of the ring by Edward the Confessor nearly a thousand years ago.
如今你所见的王冠是在1838年为维多利亚女王打造的，但上面很多的单颗宝石都拥有更长的历史。最古老的可能是此颗蓝宝石，它曾经镶嵌在忏悔者爱德华的一枚戒指上。
The pearls are set to belong to the 1st Queen Elizabeth.

The story goes for this strangely-shaped ruby, was given to the Black Prince after a battle in Spain in 1367. I was like to think of it being worn by Henry V, during the Battle of Agincourt.
这颗造型奇特的红宝石是在1367年西班牙境内的一场战争后被赠给黑太子的，我倾向于亨利五世也在阿金库尔战役中戴过它。
It’s difficult to be absolutely certain about some of the other stones, because after the execution of Charles I, Cromwell had the crown jewels broken up and sold. The Black Prince’s Ruby, for instance, was sold for 4 pounds, but it was returned to the crown after the restoration of Charles II.

Most of the biggest had adventures. According to tradition, this huge sapphire back, was carried off to the pocket by James II as he went into exile in 1688. It was over 130 years before it was restored to the crown.

This great diamond is a more recent edition. The 1st Star of Africa is even bigger and is in the Sceptre. Both of them are parts of an immense diamond which was found quite by chance by the manager of mine in South Africa in 1905. Apparently he just dug it out of the rock face with his walking stick. This is a model which shows you what it looked like. The whole Cullinan Diamond as it came to be owned was given to my great grandfather King Edward VII on his birthday. The Dutch driller who had this split before it could be polished, was so overcome by the responsibility that he fainted as he struck the blow, but he did it perfectly. There’re two smaller pieces which my grandmother always referred to as the chips.

This crown is worn at the openings of the Parliament and after a coronation. The other one – the St. Edward’s Crown – is only worn once at the moment of crowning.
这顶王冠于议会开幕式和加冕典礼后戴用。另一顶——圣爱德华王冠——仅在加冕典礼当时被戴用一次。
