编者按:任何一种学术的发展都是建基在学术史的脉络里的。当代中国的妇女/社会性别的研究的发展同样离不开学术史的滋养。中国妇女史学家贺萧(Gail Herchatter)以英语世界中的研究二十世纪(中国大陆)妇女的650本著作为基础,并分成三个专题“妇女与婚姻、家庭、性存在、和社会性别差异”、“妇女与劳动”、“妇女与国家的现代性”,分类进行评述。她为我们构勒了一幅极为重要的英语世界研究大陆妇女的学术地图,不夸张地说,这本书是是进入这个学科、了解这个学科最重要的指南书。为了尊重版权,我们不能翻译整本书,只是以贺萧的这份学术地图为基础,把每个专题中其所引用的书目列出来,希望给有志于这某方面研究的学者,提供一份“兵力部署图”和“路径指南书”。但是,书目无法传达贺萧发人深省地精妙地点评和思考,敬请大家阅读原书。

2004年11月的《亚洲研究期刊》(Journal of Asian Studies )63.4, November 2004,91-1065发表了贺萧的长文,是本书最初的版本。这一版本的已有中文译本。贺萧:《二十世纪中国领域的妇女研究》,彭姗姗译,刘东主编:《中国学术》2004年,34/总第19、20合辑,北京:商务印书馆。2007年书的内容比2004年的文章内容有扩展。2004年译本中一些术语的译法与现在通用的理解有一些差异。
