Let us remember once again the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923. This was the solemn ceremony of remembrance marking the centennial of the passage of the infamous Chinese Exclusion Act.
It took place in the Senate Chamber of Canada, on June 23, 2023. A little more than a year ago.
I had the distinguished privilege to be the MC of that historical event. I spoke English, French, Mandarin and Catonese Chinese to host that remarkable event.
The Governor General of Canada Mary J. Simon, whom I proudly coordinated interpretation service for her installation ceremony (Inuktitut/English/French as well as sign languages of ASL and SLQ) the previous year, graced the event with her presence and a passionate speech.
So many distinguished Canadians, Chinese and other ethnicities, Indigenous and immigrants, all stood up to speak from their heart.
It was the highlight of my career and personal life. I am proud and grateful for the opportunity to represent the Chinese community in Canada.
Please don’t let that painful and shameful history go unnoticed. Please don’t allow the new Exclusion Act to be reproduced in this glorious land!
