企鹅版《老人与海》p65 难句的分享

在读原文时，遇到了这么一句话：‘You did not do so badly for something worthless,’ he said to his left hand. 'But there is a moment when I could not find you.'

高亮部分的句子我不理解，于是借助已有的版本，我成功理解了这句话。

余光中：你这废物还不太差

吴劳：你这没用的东西，总算干得还不坏

鲁羊：你这废物，干得还不算太差

要理解这句话，关键是理解这里的for, 这里的for 应该取的意思是：

used for comparing one thing with others of the same type (Cambridge dictionary)

e.g. She's very mature for her age. 和同年龄的人相比，她非常成熟。

The winter has been unusually cold for Florida. 和弗洛里达往年的冬天相比，这个冬天特别寒冷。

所以 You did not do so badly for something worthless. 和其他没用的东西相比，你这个没用的东西做得还不算太坏。

因为是翻译，所以简洁明了，上述三个译本都翻得挺好的。
