John Andrews and Three Corners
They are just gibberish and vague memories quickly before I forgot:
“….
John was among the juries of the competition of the Peak, along with IM Pei, he is the guy in an ice cream suit, and he apparently made some decisions on choosing Zaha Hadid.
They used to appoint very young people to design universities buildings, it was even advocated by the dean. and they turned out to be really good architecture. (Nowadays) apparently they don’t believe young people can design good architecture. The time has gone.
Sometimes I wonder the (typology) fancy of three corners plans is a product of will or a product of logic?
I asked: Is it some catholic figure? Is it trinity? He said: I’m not gonna answer that.
I interviewed him two to three times each year, for over ten years.(silence)….I really enjoyed that, but unfortunately he died.
He hated the project managers. For they were not involved in the earlier stages, and they just wanted to skim the cost of the final built outcome….ugly concrete patches.
He never return back to see his built project. Usually it was out of business purpose. He spent most of the time in the US and Canada, he is opposed of travel by flight.
In the 70s there was this huge Syd Melb rivalry debate going on. And Andrews he wanted to leave something in his hometown.
The gov policy back then, both the labor and the liberal, made a bunch of policies to supoort sports, conventions, and casinos, subsidized and turned into private, instead of going into public housing, which resulted in lingering issues now we are facing.
In the 80s, Andrew passed on the firm to his senior associate, basically he knew he can close the firm at any point. He spent most of his time fishing and hunting.
