从卦气来看，复为十一月之卦。阳气在十月坤卦被剥除到尽，变成纯阴，十一月时阴气达到顶点，这也是阴阳消长的转折点，阳气就是在这最冷的时候返回，阳爻归来，正是复卦的卦义之所在，同时这时天地也开始进入另一阴阳消长的循环。
“一元复始”的吉祥语就是源自于此，意指最下方一个乾元归来。只是“一元复始”正是冬至最为寒冷之时，诸事不宜，所以《大象传》说“先王以至日闭关，商旅不行，后不省方”。因此和“一元复始”比较应景的时节应是冬至吃汤圆，不是春节春暖花开。
