- Raceteenth
The term “Raceteenth” is an allusion to Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in America. It is a holiday to which Ifemelu can tangentially connect because of her West African origins, which most enslaved Africans in the United States share by ancestry, but she also experiences a deep lack of intimacy with and attachment to it due to her foreignness.

- SapphicDerrida
Sapphic derives from Sappho, Greek poet of the 7th Century BC who wrote about her attraction to women. It can be considered as a fancy alternative for lesbian.
