Russia Prepares to Annex Parts of Ukraine as Staged Votes End

Russia is set to formally annex occupied territories in Ukraine after staging referendums that involved coercion, threats and, in some places, soldiers going door to door and forcing people to vote at gunpoint.
在乌克兰被占领地区安排全民公投后，俄罗斯料将正式宣布吞并其占领的乌克兰领土。但这场全民公投充斥着胁迫和威胁，在某些地方士兵甚至挨家挨户用枪逼迫人们投票。

- annex /əˈneks/ 读音和record一样做名词和动词重音不一样 文中为v. 强占，并吞(国家、地区等) 作为n.时 附件; 附录; 附属物
- stage 做动词有3意思，这里表示“组织；筹划”，如：to stage a ceremony/an event/an exhibition 举行仪式/活动/展览。
- referendum /ˌref.əˈren.dəm/ 表示“（就重大政治或社会问题进行的）全民公决，全民公投”refer-en-dum
- coercion /kəʊ'ɜːʃ ə n/ 表示“强迫；胁迫，逼迫”，举个🌰：The defendant explained that he had been acting under coercion.被告辩解说他是受到胁迫才那么做的。 co-er-cion coercion and threats 胁迫和威胁
- xx at gunpoint 表示“在枪口威胁下；用枪威胁”，英文解释为“experiencing or using a threat of killing with a gun”举个🌰 The family were held at gunpoint for an hour while the men raided their house. 长达一个小时的时间里，这一家人在枪口威胁下，眼睁睁地看着这伙人抢掠他们的家。
Kyiv and Western governments have described the votes as a sham designed to confer a veneer of legitimacy to Moscow’s seizure of Ukrainian land seven months on from its invasion. They could also enable Moscow to claim that any effort by Ukrainian forces to recapture the territories, in the south and east of the country, amounts to an attack on Russia itself.

- sham /ʃæm/ 表示“假象；骗局；假冒者；冒牌货”，和shame形近。实际意思又类似fake。 It turned out that he wasn't a real doctor at all - he was just a sham. 原来他根本就不是个真正的医生，只是个骗子而已。
- confer /kənˈfɜːr/ 1）表示“授予（称号、荣誉）；赋予（优势）”： An honorary doctorate was conferred on him by Peking University. 北京大学授予他荣誉博士学位。 2）表示“（常指为达成行动决议而）商讨，商议，协商”， 我想花点时间跟我的律师商量一下。 I need some time to confer with my lawyer.
- veneer /vəˈnɪər/ 表示“掩饰物；虚饰”，~ of 虚饰，虚假的外表，一层……的外衣（包装起来） She managed to hide her corrupt dealings under a veneer of respectability. 她设法用一层体面的外衣掩盖了自己的腐败勾当。
- legitimacy /ləˈdʒɪt.ə.mə.si/ 表示“合法性”，注意读音 le gi ti ma cy
- seizure /ˈsiːʒə/ 1）表示“占领，夺取，攫取”，，如：the seizure of power/property/control 对权力/财产/控制权的攫取。 动词seize [siːz]
- recapture /ˌriːˈkæp.tʃər/ 表示“（尤指用武力）夺回，收复，重新占领”，举个🌰：The army recaptured the town.军队收复了这座城镇
- amount to sth. 表示“等同于，相当于”，：His behaviour amounted to serious professional misconduct.他的行为相当于严重失职。
