Since everything in the world of matter is composed of these five elements, it is useful to imagine that they are broken down into very small pieces, which are composed of the atomic elements. These small pieces of earth, water, fire, air and space are then mixed or strung together in varying combinations. In this way, our bodies, the food we eat the persons we associate with and climate are all exposing us to different amounts of the five elements, which we are constantly taking in and absorbing. Sometimes we do this directly as in the case of eating food, and other times energetically, such as when we stand by a fire and absorb heat from its burning.
The first step in learning Vedic astrology, Yoga, Ayurveda or any spiritual science is to meditate upon these five elements until be recognized in their obvious reservoirs in Nature and in their subtle and varying amounts in all the objects that surround us. For example, it is easy to recognize a pool of water. To recognize that watermelon has a preponderance of water is also obvious once we look closely. It is also clear that by itself, water tends to be cool or cold rather than hot. If someone is cold and you feed them waterme1on, they would feel colder. The opposite is true with chili peppers, which have more fire in them. If someone is hot and you feed them chili peppers, they would feel even hotter. In some substances these relationships are very subtle and in others their elemental nature is more obvious. This topic is discussed at greater length in the Ayurvedic Medicine Deck.
In people, these same qualities are present. If you are the kind of person who is hardly ever cold and your fire of digestion is very strong, then there is more fire in your being. If you are exposed to more fire, it will increase your heat. Others are often cold, especially their extremities, and some are cool. We even say in everybody speech:“He is so cool” or “She is a hot tamale.” Not only are our bodies made of the five elements. Hearing is related to space, touch to air, sight to fire, taste to five primal elements, with speech connected to space, grasping to air, locomotion to fire, sexuality to water and bowel movements to earth. Similarly, the levels of our body, which arc called chakras, are the five elements stacked on top each other.
When small piece of the five elements are made into food, six specific flavors emerge. These are the six flavors that our tongues can experience, which are astringent, bitter, sweet, salty, sour and pungent. All food is some combination of there six flavors. The six flavors are made of specific combinations of the five elements.
The Six Flavors
--------------------------------------------------
As we eat, we are filling our bodies with pieces of the five elements and are either creating balance or imbalance. If you refer to books on Ayurvedic medicine, you can study more deeply the connection between food and the five elements. For the purposes of using this card deck, it is enough to know that the five elements pervade everything in the material world.
In these and many other ways, the five elements affect every aspect of our lives and being. In Order to use this deck effectively, it is necessary to meditate upon each component or level until you can see it in yourself, in nature and in the people around you. This process begins with the most fundamental ingredients—the five great elements.
