Lori Gottlieb_Maybe You should Talk to Someone***

【Quote1】One of the most important steps in therapy is helping people take responsibility for their current predicaments, because once they realize that they can (and must) construct their own lives, they’re free to generate change. Often, though, people carry around the belief that the majority of their problems are circumstantial—which is to say, external. And if the problems are caused by everyone and everything else, by stuff out there, why should they bother to change themselves? Even if they decide to do things differently, won’t the rest of the world still be the same? It’s a reasonable argument. But that’s not how life generally works. Remember Sartre’s famous line “Hell is other people”? It’s true—the world is filled with difficult people. But sometimes—more often than we tend to realize—those difficult people are us. That’s right—sometimes hell is us. Sometimes we are the cause of our difficulties. And if we can step out of our own way, something astonishing happens.
【Quote2】The purpose of inquiring about people’s parents isn’t to join them in blaming, judging, or criticizing their parents. In fact, it’s not about their parents at all. It’s solely about understanding how their early experiences inform who they are as adults so that they can separate the past from the present. Most people’s parents did their absolute best, whether that “best”was an A-minus or a D-plus. It’s the rare parent who, however limited, deep down doesn’t want his or her child to have a good life. That doesn’t mean people can’t have feelings about their parents’limitations. They just need to figure out what to do with them.
【Quote3】Sometimes in their pain, people believe that the agony will last forever. But feelings are actually more like weather systems—they blow in and they blow out. Just because you feel sad this minute or this hour or this day doesn’t mean you’ll feel that way in ten minutes or this afternoon or next week. Everything you feel—anxiety, elation, anguish—blows in and out again.
Gary Chapman_The 5 Love Languages

豆瓣上第一眼瞅到这本书的标题,觉得可能是chicken soup with lots of cliches。 1)作者基于自己三十年marriage counseling的经验,总结了爱的五种表达方式: words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, and physical touch。
【Quote1】Welcome to the real world of marriage, where hairs are always on the sink and little white spots cover the mirror, where arguments center on which way the toilet paper comes off and whether the lid should be up or down. It is a world where shoes do not walk to the closet and drawers do not close themselves, where coats do not like hangers and socks go AWOL during laundry. In this world, a look can hurt and a word can crush. Intimate lovers can become enemies, and marriage a battlefield.
【Quote2】One of the by-products of quality activities is that they provide a memory bank from which to draw in the years ahead. Fortunate is the couple who remembers an early morning stroll along the coast, the spring they planted the flower garden, the time they got poison ivy chasing the rabbit through the woods, the night they attended their first major league baseball game together, the one and only time they went skiing together and he broke his leg, the amusement parks, the concerts, the cathedrals, and oh, yes, the awe of standing beneath the waterfall after the two-mile hike. They can almost feel the mist as they remember. Those are memories of love, especially for the person whose primary love language is quality time.
【Quote3】We are trained to analyze problems and create solutions. We forget that marriage is a relationship, not a project to be completed or a problem to solve. A relationship calls for sympathetic listening with a view to understanding the other person’s thoughts, feelings, and desires. We must be willing to give advice but only when it is requested and never in a condescending manner. Most of us have little training in listening. We are far more efficient in thinking and speaking. Learning to listen may be as difficult as learning a foreign language, but learn we must, if we want to communicate love.

58. 纪录片:Lynn Novick_College Behind Bars(4集)***

【Quote1】At 19 years old, I enrolled in Onondaga Community College. I was also working in the hospital. But once I told my employer that I’d enrolled into college, he cut my hours completely. I was a teenager, I had bills to pay, and I was on my own. I was very desperate for money, and I started robbing people. One robbery went terribly wrong. I killed someone... Over the years, I had never forgotten that this man was a father and that he had a young daughter. She is a young woman now... So there’s a lot going on inside about this with me. On one hand, I know exactly what it feels like to lose someone. On the other hand, it’s not fair to the family for me to equate their loss with my loss. And there’s nothing I can say. An apology doesn’t address any of their pain. I’m responsible for all of this. I don’t know how you go about even convincing people that that one act is not who I am.
【Quote2】I am not worthy of redemption, and part of the reason why we think this is because of the wording “violent criminal.”It is not the violent act that you’ve committed fifteen, twenty years ago. You are a violent criminal. There’s something that is inherent about you, that we must protect the rest of society away from. This person did something terrible, and he should be punished for it. But... he is a person. He might change. He might not be a bad person.
【Quote3】Colleges helps us learn about the nation, helps us become civic beings, and helps us understand that we have an interest in our community, that our community is a part of us and we are a part of it. And oftentimes, we don’t feel that way in a prison environment. We feel as if we’re cut off from the community. The community is against us. When you have an absence of any programs in prison that facilitate any kind of growth, individuals are becoming disillusioned because they are not prepared for anything other than what they’ve already been doing, which is crime.

Melinda Gates_The Moment of Lift

【Quote1】We tend to push out the people who have qualities we’re most afraid we will find in ourselves---and sometimes we falsely ascribe qualities we disown to certain groups, then push those groups out as a way of denying those traits in ourselves. This is what drives dominant groups to push different racial and religious groups to the margins. And we’re often not honest about what’s happening. If we’re on the inside and see someone on the outside, we often say to ourselves, “I'm not in that situation because I'm different.”But that’s just pride talking. We could easily be that person. We have all things inside us. We just don’t like to confess what we have in common with outsiders because it’s too humbling. It suggests that maybe success and failure aren’t entirely fair. And if you know you got the better deal, then you have to be humble, and it hurts to give up your sense of superiority and say, “I’m no better than others.”So instead we invent excuses for our need to exclude. We say it’s about merit or tradition when it’s really just protecting our privilege and our pride.
The starting point for human improvement is empathy. Everything flows from that. Empathy allows for listening, and listening leads to understanding. That’s how we gain a common base of knowledge. When people can’t agree, it’s often because there is no empathy, no sense of shared experience. If you feel what others feel, you’re more likely to see what they see. Then you can understand one another. Then you can move to the honest and respectful exchange of ideas that is the mark of a successful partnership. That’s the source of progress.
【Quote2】Killian says, “To be known without being loved is terrifying. To be loved without being known has no power to change us. But to be deeply known and deeply loved transforms us.”Trying to help others while keeping them at a safe distance cannot truly help them or heal us. We have to open up to others. We have to give up the need to be separate and superior. Then we can help. Working on ourselves while working for others is the inner and outer work---where the effort to change the world and the effort to change ourselves come together.
【Quote3】Many successful social movements are driven by the same combination—strong activism and the ability to take pain without passing it on. Anyone who can combine those two finds a voice with moral force. There is a big difference between a loud voice and a strong voice. The loud voice of a man who has no inner life and is a stranger to his own grief is never a voice for justice; it’s a voice for self-interest, dominance, or vengeance. Strong male voices for freedom and dignity come from men like Gandhi, King, and Mandela who mastered their pain, gave up on vengeance, and preached forgiveness.
The most radical approach to resistance is acceptance—and acceptance does not mean accepting the world as it is. It means accepting our pain as it is. If we refuse to accept our pain, then we’re just trying to make ourselves feel better—and when our hidden motive is to make ourselves feel better, there is no limit to the damage we can do in the name of justice. Great leaders never combine a call for justice with a cry for vengeance. Leaders who can master their pain have taken self-interest off their agenda, so their voice rings with moral power. They are no longer speaking their truth. They are speaking truth.

Ricki Stern&Anne Sundberg_Reversing Roe

【Quote1】When a woman becomes pregnant, she loses a part of herself to someone else. Most of us want that because it’s beautiful. It is not that way for everyone. We can sit here self-righteously and decide that we always know best for every person, but we do not. There’s no reason to come back here, session after session, make it more and more difficult, and drive women back into the shadows of illegal abortions. If you want to stop abortions, then help stop unwanted pregnancies.
---a female senator of Taxes
【Quote2】One of the strategies of the anti-choice movement is to shame people who provide abortions and people who have abortions. If you think about controlling when and if and how many children somebody has, it’s sort of the absolute demonstration of patriarchy because controlling people’s fertility can affect what education they can get, what career they can have, and how far they can go in life.
---Doctor Colleen McNicholas, Gynecologist
【Quote3】The rights of autonomy, bodily integrity, and equality are central to our notions of ordered liberty. The Roe vs. Wadecase lies at the heart of those interests. Abortion is not about whether or not women should have particular medical procedures. It’s about equity. It’s about a view of life, about who should make important decisions.

Martin Scorsese_Pretend It's a City(7集)

【Quote1】An artist, if he or she is a truly artist, is only interested in one thing, that is, to wake up the minds of men, to have mankind and womankind realize that there is something greater than what we see on the surface.
【Quote2】I don’t have these hi-tech things not because I don’t know what they are, but because I do know what they are.
【Quote3】I think a book isn’t supposed to be a mirror. It’s supposed to be a door. No matter who you are, you have just one life. But in books, you have a zillion lives. To me, it’s just a way of being immensely rich.
James Redford_Amy Tan

【Quote1】In my office is a time capsule. Seven large, clear plastic bins safeguarding frozen moments in time. A past that began before my birth. During the writing of this book, I delved into the contents. Memorabilia, letters, photos, and the like. And what I found had the force of glaciers calving. I am not the subject matter of mothers and daughters or Chinese culture or immigrant experience that most people cite as my domain. I am a writer compelled by a subconscious neediness to know, which is different from a need to know. The latter can be satisfied with information. The former is a perpetual state of uncertainty and a tether to the past.
【Quote2】I didn’t seek to be a politician. I didn’t seek to be a representative of a whole community of people. I just hoped to write some good stories. And yet when I was given this mantle of speaking for the Asian-American community, suddenly, there were these expectations. I started getting a lot of criticism. Some said I did it wrong, that I had created stereotypes---mothers speaking in broken English or concubines who had killed themselves---and pandered to those. In the beginning, I didn’t know what to say. I would be caught off-guard. But then I realized, what they wanted really was role models. They wanted me to right the social injustices. And finally, they had somebody in the limelight who should now address that and not be pandering to the mainstream. What they were asking me to do was to write propaganda. I understand it, but to be true to myself, I could not give in to that kind of pressure.
【Quote3】In 2016, I started to draw what I saw out the window. I don’t have anyone expecting me to produce anything, and in fact, when somebody says to me, ‘Can you draw me a bird?’like my publisher did, and I said, ‘Sure,’and then I couldn’t draw him a bird. And I realized that was a part of it. The freedom to do what I enjoyed had to come with no expectations and that I did it only for myself.

【Quote1】You see, I’m trying in all my stories to get the feeling of the actual life across, not just to depict life or criticize it, but to actually make it alive so that when you’ve read something by me, you actually experience the thing. You can’t do this without putting in the bad and the ugly as well as what is beautiful because if it is all beautiful, you can’t believe in it. Things aren’t that way. It is only by showing both sides, 3 dimensionally, and if possible, 4 that you can write the way I want to.
——Ernest Hemingway
【Quote2】It is, note, my fault: I am the one who has changed and I am ashamed and guilty, too, because I am breaking his heart. We quarreled too much, I suppose. it’ll all sickening and I’m sad to death and afraid. I only want to be alone. I want to myself and alone and free, to breathe, live, look upon the world and find it however it is. I want my own name back, most violently, as if getting it back would give me some of myself.
——Martha Gellhorn, journalist, writer, and the 3rd wife of Hemingway, who had the guts to divorce him
【Quote3】I think that there are difficult interpretations for the Old Man and Sea. If a young person reads it, it’s about adventure, the struggle, the heroism of the old man, drawing strength from only his conviction. But I think that for someone older, it’s more about old age, the way it resuscitates, how it fights its last battle, knowing that it’s going to lose. From the beginning, the old fisherman knows he cannot win the battle against the sharks. But he still wages a battle because, in a way, even if he loses the battle, it gives him a better understanding for himself. And it gives him an illusion, which allows him to live.

【Quote】Funeral Blues by W. H. Auden
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message ‘He Is Dead.’
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever; I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

John Williams_Stoner***

【Quote1】In his extreme youth Stoner had thought of love as an absolute state of being to which, if one were lucky, one might find access; in his maturity he had decided it was the heaven of a false religion, toward which one ought to gaze with an amused disbelief, a gently familiar contempt, and an embarrassed nostalgia. Now in his middle age he began to know that it was neither a state of grace nor an illusion; he saw it as a human act of becoming, a condition that was invented and modified moment by moment and day by day, by the will and the intelligence and the heart.
【Quote2】He found himself wondering if his life were worth the living; if it had ever been. It was a question, he suspected, that came to all men at one time or another; he wondered if it came to them with such impersonal force as it came to him. The question brought with it a sadness, but it was a general sadness which (he thought) had little to do with himself or with his particular fate; he was not even sure that the question sprang from the most immediate and obvious causes, from what his own life had become. It came, he believed, from the accretion of his years, from the density of accident and circumstance, and from what he had come to understand of them. He took a grim and ironic pleasure from the possibility that what little learning he had managed to acquire had led him to this knowledge: that in the long run all things, even the learning that let him know this, were futile and empty, and at last diminished into a nothingness they did not alter.
【Quote3】Deep in him, beneath his memory, was the knowledge of hardship and hunger and endurance and pain. Though he seldom thought of his early years on the Booneville farm, there was always near his consciousness the blood knowledge of his inheritance, given him by forefathers whose lives were obscure and hard and stoical and whose common ethic was to present to an oppressive world faces that were expressionless and hard and bleak. And though he looked upon them with apparent impassivity, he was aware of the times in which he lived. He saw good men go down into a slow decline of hopelessness, broken as their vision of a decent life was broken; he saw them walking aimlessly upon the streets, their eyes empty like shards of broken glass; he saw them walk up to back doors, with the bitter pride of men who go to their executions, and beg for the bread that would allow them to beg again; and he saw men, who had once walked erect in their own identities, look at him with envy and hatred for the poor security he enjoyed as a tenured employee of an institution that somehow could not fail. He did not give voice to this awareness; but the knowledge of common misery touched him and changed him in ways that were hidden deep from the public view, and a quiet sadness for the common plight was never far beneath any moment of his living.
Ian McEwan_The Children Act

【Quote】Marital or partner breakdown and distress in Great Britain swelled like a freak spring tide, sweeping away entire households, scattering possessions and hopeful dreams, drowning those without a powerful instinct for survival. Loving promises were denied or rewritten, once easy companions became artful combatants crouching behind counsel, oblivious to the costs. Once neglected domestic items were bitterly fought for, once easy trust was replaced by carefully worded “arrangements.”In the minds of the principals, the history of the marriage was redrafted to have been always doomed, love was recast as delusion. And the children? Counters in a game, bargaining chips for use by mothers, objects of financial or emotional neglect by fathers; the pretext for real or fantasized or cynically invented charges of abuse, usually by mothers, sometimes by fathers; dazed children shuttling weekly between households in co-parenting agreements, mislaid coats or pencil cases shrilly broadcast by one solicitor to another; children doomed to see their fathers once or twice a month, or never, as the most purposeful men vanished into the smithy of a hot new marriage to forge new offspring.

There is an inn beside the village temple. Look!
The winding path leads to the hut beside the brook.

【Quote】I don’t hate men, but I wonder how a man would feel if they’d lived my life. Because it was a man who sexually abused me when I was a child. It was a man who beat the shit out of me when I was 17, my prime. It was two men who raped me when I was barely in my twenties. Tell me why is that okay. Why was it okay to pick me off the pack like that and do that to me? It would have been more humane to just take me out to the back paddock and put a bullet in my head if it is that much of a crime to be different!
I don’t tell you this so you think of me as a victim. I am not a victim. I tell you this because my story has value. I tell you this ‘cause I want you to know, I need you to know, what I know. To be rendered powerless does not destroy your humanity. Your resilience is your humanity. The only people who lose their humanity are those who believe they have the right to render another human being powerless. They are the weak. To yield and not break, that is incredible strength. You destroy the woman, you destroy the past she represents. I will not allow my story to be destroyed. What I would have done to have heard a story like mine. Not for blame. Not for reputation, not for money, not for power. But to feel less alone. To feel connected. I want my story heard. Because, ironically, I believe Picasso was right. I believe we could paint a better world if we learned how to see it from all perspectives, as many perspectives as we possibly could. Because diversity is strength. Difference is a teacher. Fear difference, you learn nothing.

【Quote】Men calling women hormonal. Pretty much it’s the number one hobby of mankind of all time. Like, a man is allowed to call a woman hormonal just whenever a woman says or does something a man failed to predict. That’s it. It’s like, “I wasn’t expecting that, so, clearly, you’re just a clusterfuck of internalized chaos, you make up to be a bitch.”Like, men call women hormonal as if men don’t have hormones. That’s the bit that shits me. Because newsflash, fellas, you’ve got hormones. And sometimes you get testy... Do you know what “boys will be boys”means? It means we are not preparing our boys for the real world. It means we know that boys are at the mercy of their hormones. We’re just culturally incapable of holding them accountable for their actions, so we hold women accountable.

【Quote1】I realized, in everything that I was saying, what was underneath my words was essentially, “why can't you just be less judgemental, and more like me?”which is judgemental and arrogant, to try and change somebody else’s perspective just so that the world can seem better for me. It’s important that we have these contrasts in life. Nothing ever got created from things being the same. It’s from the contrasts in life that anything happens. I realized in the end that I couldn't change them, all I could was change my perspective on them, and then move on with my life.
【Quote2】I saw the film Waking Life. I don’t know if you've seen it, but one line stood out for me. “Actual self-awareness is the knowledge that you are a character in someone else’s dream.”I love this idea that it could all be a dream, and it’s somebody else’s dream. I makes everything so silly. There’s no need to fear anything, no need to feel anxious about anything. It's all a dream. And if you’re playing a character, and that character isn’t serving you, that shy, anxious character who can’t talk to people, let go of the character. Become a different character.

I was watching the news one day, and there was a guy at a rally, and they were asking him about immigration and families being separated, etc. This guy, regardless of his politics, he was being really mean and xenophobic, and racist. The journalist asked him about children and he just went straight in, he was like, “Boy, I tell you what, I don’t give a damn about any of these goddamn Mexicans. They ain’t supposed to be here, boy.
