Most people cringe when they hear their recorded voice for the first time. Yet, when they are speaking, they rarely feel anything out of place.
Why does that happen?
Most of us live inside our own heads, imagining that the person we believe we are presenting to the world is indeed the person that the world sees. Cringeworthy moments yank us out of that fantasy, forcing us to at least briefly take an outsider’s view of ourselves.
Since you’re not in tune with what other people see, you rarely have an opportunity to improve your demeanor, mannerisms and speech behavior.
On the other hand, when it comes to judging speakers on the podium, actors in a TV show and our managers, we’re able to compile tomes of feedback.
So, just like how a mirror provides visual feedback on how the public world is seeing you, you can follow the steps below for 30 days to register a drastic improvement in the way you speak:
1. Every morning, find an interesting news story or article.
2. Open up a video recording tool and record yourself for 2 minutes attempting to explain the story as eloquently as possible.
3. Force yourself to review the recording despite the cringe factor.
a. Count the filler words: “like”, “you know”,”umm” etc.
数一数填充词:“like”,“you know”,“umm”等等。
b. Count re-dos: the number of times you had to re-frame a sentence before completing it.
c. Assess the speed of your speech.
d. If you repeated a word more than 4 times, look for a synonym.
e. Notice your hand gestures & facial expressions.
4. Repeat this for every language you know (our communication style varies with each).
Do this for a month and then compare the video on Day 1 vs Day 30.
