【IELTS WRITING 3】People can now perform everyday tasks such as shopping, banking, and business transactions without meeting others face to face. What are the effects on both the individual and society?
Technical advance, especially telecommunications, has made online businesses available and prevalent. People are inclined to complete most of their services without having to meet other individuals. This practice influences people and society significantly.
In a hectic world, virtual activities become trendy with their traits of easiness and efficiency. On the individual side, the e-banking system frees customers from going downtown or queuing in the lounge. Instead, they can complete financial services with some clicks. Therefore, people gain more time to seek a quality life – pursuing their hobbies and interests. On the other hand, interacting online overcomes the barriers of geography and time. Take distance learning as an example: a teacher can deliver a lecture through a video call while at his residence, never bothered by commuting to school. The whole society will be more productive and therefore prosperous.
Regardless of all the exhilarating advantages, online working comes at a price. A sedentary lifestyle links to an increased risk of heart disease. Fewer social activities and more use of machinery cause alienation and estrangement in society. Family relations are deteriorating as people are more dependent on laptops and mobile phones. Humans cry for humane warmth – the presence of our fellow creatures – indispensable for authentic connection. A lot of fun stories happen during roaming shopping malls with friends, bantering, and laughing. By and large, society is losing its sense of community when people rarely meet each other, which would perhaps eradicate the need for socialization.
The application of modern devices and tools of communication has brought unprecedented convenience to both life and work. Negative impacts, however, are lurking. Banging on the keyboard arises emotional issues and even causes social crises while technological advancement only deals with physical needs.
