I don't think Kurt's instinct is self-preservation, he was always looking for energy - clear in his presence on stage, and in relationships - and intimacy. As unhealthy as he was - in the end - he once threatened a journalist, probably for talking about Courtney, the relationship, or all three. But it seemed to me to be a search for instinct control, than to maintain inner peace, or to be morally correct. ☾ NeFi > SeTi. She's only mistyped as ESTP because she's extremely blunt (Fi can be very principled and prone to inflexibility and tertiary Te is just as assertive as dominant Te but more impulsive) and a drug junkie (a lot of NeSi users (xNxPs) are prone to leaping into new experiences just like their high Se counterparts, but will throw themselves only for increasing their cognitive understanding of the world by indulging themselves in "edgy" cultures and hobbies like non-medicinal drug consumption and the like). She'd always remind me of a real-life version of Haruhi Suzumiya, except a lot more broken and angstier.

He's a heavy Fi type and an extravert - Fi- "The world that surrounded me disgusted me so I chosen to invent one of my own. Fi- "If you've lost your faith in love and music, Oh the end won't be long..." Fi- "It's just about bein' yourself...even when you're on the dole, it's about your leather jacket. .Music is the last refuge of the working class, along with football...in fact, gigs and riots are the only things left. Fi- "I'm not going to be hardened by these people, to these things, I'm not going to let them destroy my feelings or my emotions. Fi- "I've got a fierce passion for politics but I can't stand the smarmy, hypocritical upper-middle-class dictator nation that prevails and has always prevailed in this country. I'm up for petrol bombers, mate, and fighting in the streets. "I don't really deal with the attention I receive to be honest. I build up a fantasy world around me that I inhabit. I cherry pick elements of literature, music, film, history and art, then weave them together to construct a fantasy reality to live in. It doesn't always work out though, I got evicted from my own fantasy once, which was quite embarrassing."- I can't see anyone but an NFP saying that, it's a very NFP quote.

It's true that he had a serious work ethic and that he was socially aware and had a pretty decent confidence, but apparently he wasn't somebody who lived out of his mind all that much, he was known for building up good and/or altruistic ideas, plans exc. but then often not knowing how/not being able for whatever reason to put them into practice. He wasn't all that ambitious neither in terms of career and achievements, he wanted to do whatever he liked the best way he could for the sake of the experience and the idea behind the project, not for the money, fame or the desire to achieve a specific material goal, he just didn't care about honorifics, awards at all exc. He hated to be at the center of attention in terms of fame, had great issues with handle all the responsibility and had a very simple appearance. He also was kinda awkward when it came to talk in front of cameras and some people also said that he was a little shy at the beginning, not a show off (even looks wise) or a goal oriented person. Even when it came to knowing people and practical experiences, he seemed to want to know them deeply, to experience things and explore for the sake of pure simple knowledge, to understand what those things where all about and what impact they'd have in his life, this alone says nothing special probably but together with everything else seems something pretty 4w5 related. But yeah in general overall he sounds more like a socially aware w5 rather than a w3.
INFJs are known for their ability to see clearly people's potential and helping them towards it. “...River introduced me to every experience that helped to form the direction I took in my life. He was always encouraging me and sharing everything he had” , said his brother Joaquin (who, i believe, was INFP) Also INFJs are highly interested in people and seek for knowing them on a deep level. “River liked to tell stories and liked to listen to stories... because it allowed him to know you better, and he liked to get to know people very well...” - Gus Van Sant INFJs are often activists, not because of their moral code, but because it really affects them what's going on in the world. We all know how passionate River was about it, there's a record on the internet (his voice even hadn't broken yet) where he's talking to someone about how he and his family can make the world a better place. "I have a lot of chameleon qualities, I get very absorbed in my surroundings." Obvious Fe, come on! INFP would be authentic no matter company, River obviously didn't really care about it. He just was unique naturally, that's probably why he's often typed as INFP since those are radiating uniqueness and usually are pretty okay(even proud) with their weirdness (in a good sense) and strive for it. Like Joaquin, when he decided that his name was too usual and changed it to Leaf, but then River adviced him to return it. I can go on and on, but I'm limited :D His life literally revolved around his own morals, he was clearly very strict when it came to them and took way too personally every action and person who went against them, even in a pretty exaggerated way sometimes (like the story that one of his girlfriends told once about the fact that he cried and ran out of a restaurant because she ordered fish or meat *don't know if it's real or not but it was very famous*), but also in his interviews he talked mainly about them and wanted people to follow him in that sense since from his POV it couldn't be possible to view it in a different way. He was passionate and strict in a way that disregarded also social peace if needed. It was obvious that he lived through his own morals, he based his person and his decision making process on them, Fi and Ti work in a similar way, they just focus on different things. He cared to a great length about building up personal identity, coherence and honesty. It's true that he probably was a social chameleon but it's not always Fe related, he liked to know people and to be around them so in order to do so it's normal to be good at small talk or to make people open up, it's also common imo to be pretty good at it being a pretty social and handsome NF that the majority of the world adored. But other than those social skills he was known for being overly gullible and naive, usually it's easier for high Fe users to be socially aware in terms of reading the room and people. He sometimes was mistreated by
Even INFPs have a pretty bad usage of Se tbh. As for his Ne it's hard to spot it openly because in public places he was very shy and awkward, especially in interviews. It's not weird for introverts to not have a strong obvious secondary Ne if they are not with people that they feel comfortable with (I also speak from personal experience with my Ne). It was well known that he disliked interviews, especially magazine interviews (at the time they were the majority) since they always lied or at least modified the context of sentences just to make it juicier and more interesting than normal. But for what I could understand he was extremely creative both from an artistic pov and also irl, he liked to experiment, to always try new things just for the sake of understanding and having fun, many of these things were also quite reckless or child like in the way they were made. Ni/Ti user often ain't reckless in that same way (even if they have a bad usage of Se). He was also known for asking tons of questions, even if they were inappropriate or weird, he just seemed to want to know more things as possible through an external and possibility based approach that's maybe also part of the reason why he wanted to know people personally. Seems to me like a more Ne like approach to curiosity. The fact that he was gullible help with creating problems. I've always thought that being gullible and having high Ne are is a deadly combo if the said people don't find someone to keep them checked.
