《The Element of Style》笔记三

A Few Matters of Form

书中一共讲了11中形式，这里我只摘取了3种我比较常用到的。其它的8种形式分别是：colloquialisms, exclamations, headings, hyphen, margins, numerals, references, syllabication。

Parentheses

当一个句子有部分在圆括号内，这句话的标点符号的位置仍然应该在括号之外。括号内的表达独立标点，如果句尾需要句号可以忽略（问号或者感叹号不能忽略）。 I went to her house yesterday (my thired attempt to see her), but she had left town. He declares (and why should we doubt his good faith?) that he is now certain of success

唯一一个例外是，如果整个句子都在括号内，我们就不用忽略句号了。 (When a wholly sentence detached expression or sentence is parenthesized, the final stop comes before the last mark of parenthesis.)

Quotations

· 正式的引用（比如文件证明）用冒号和引号引导。 The United States Coast Pilot has this to say of the place: "Bracy Cove has a rocky and uneven bottom." · 如果引用部分在语法上是同位语或动词的直接宾语，用逗号和引号引导。 I'm reminede of the advice of my neighbor, "Never worry about the weather." My mom says, "Be prepared for tommorow." · that引导的引文是间接引语，不用引号。 Keats declares that beauty is truth, truth beauty. · 如果引用一行或者一行以上的文字，为了区别之前的正文，引文可以另起一行并且缩进。引文也不用引号引导。 Wordsworth's enthusiasm for the French Revolution was at first unbounded: Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive, But to be young was very heaven!

Title

书名一般是斜体加首字母大写。如果书名前使用所有格，把书名中的A或者The去掉。 A Tale of Two Cities ==> Dickens's Tale of Two Cities
