Rob: Honey, I'm home. Where are you?
Beth Ann: I'm right here, darling. I've missed you.
Rob: Is dinner ready?
- Is something ready?: 某某东西准备好了吗？
Beth Ann: Uh not yet.
Rob: I've had a hell of day. I'm gonna go fix myself a drink. Let me know when food's on the table.
- a hell of: used to emphasize the idea that something is very big, very good, very bad etc 极度（差的，好的，大的等）的
- fix someone something: prepare a meal or drinks 给某人准备餐饮
[SIGHS.]
Beth Ann: So you had a rough day?
- rough: a rough period is one in which you have a lot of problems or difficulties 艰苦的，艰难的
Rob: The worst. My best engineer quit today, my secretary called in sick, and on top of all that, I took my boss's briefcase home by mistake. I hope your day was better than mine.
- engineer: 工程师
- quit: v. to leave a job, school etc, especially without finishing it completely 辞职，停止
- secretary: 秘书
- call in sick: phone to say you are not coming in to work because you are ill 打电话请病假
- on top of that: if something bad happens to you on top of something else, it happens when you have other problems 紧接着，雪上加霜
- briefcase: 公文包
Beth Ann: Well, now that you ask [LAUGHS.] I had a lovely day.
- now that: 既然，由于
- lovely: adj. very pleasant, enjoyable or good 可爱的，令人愉快的
Rob: Oh?
Beth Ann: Yes. I bought a new dress.
Rob: Did you?
Beth Ann: Yeah.
Rob: That the dress?
Beth Ann: It is. What do you think?
Rob: It's nice.
Beth Ann: Just nice? It cost a whole week's allowance.
- allowance: n. an amount of money that you are given regularly or for a special purpose 津贴，零用钱
Rob: Why would you spend that much on a dress?
Beth Ann: I wanted to look pretty. For you.
- pretty: adj. being pleasant to look at or listen to; a woman or child who is pretty has a nice attractive face 漂亮的，可爱的，优美的
Rob: Oh. Well thanks. What's wrong?
Beth Ann: I don't understand. It has been years since I bought a new dress. And I got my nails done, a-and I got a new hairdo. How could you not notice?
- nail: 指甲
- hairdo: 发型
Rob: Oh. Well, to be honest, I never notice stuff like that.
- to be honest: 实话说，老实讲
- stuff: n. used when you are talking about things as materials or groups of objects when you do not know what they are called, or it is not important to say exactly what they are 东西
- “stuff”和”things”意思相近，但是前者是不可数名词，后者是可数名词。
Beth Ann: Why not?
Rob: 'Cause when I look at you, I don't see clothes or hair. I just see you the girl I married.
Beth Ann: Is that so?
- Is that so: 就这样嘛？
Rob: Yeah. I don't expect you to be chic or stylish. You're my wife. I just need you to be the same old Beth.
- chic: adj. very fashionable and expensive, and showing good judgement of what is attractive and good style 别致的，有品位的，时髦的
- stylish: adj. attractive in a fashionable way 时髦的，时尚的
[SIGHS.]
Rob: What the hell?
- what the hell: an expression of surprise, anger or both 究竟搞什么鬼？（表示惊讶或生气）
Beth Ann: If you're not going to notice what I'm wearing, why should I bother to wear anything at all?
- bother to do: to make the effort to do something 费心去做
- at all: used in negative statements and questions to emphasize what you are saying 根本，究竟
- 注："why should Ibother to wearanythingat all": 我为什么要花心思去想穿什么呢？（我根本不需要去想穿什么）
- "anything at all"的意思是“任何东西”，例句： He doesn't like anything at all.=He likes absolutely nothing.（他什么东西都不喜欢。）
Rob: Honey.
Beth Ann: You want to see the same old Beth? Fine. Here she is in all her glory.
- in one’s glory: in one’s most happy, most beautiful, or most successful state 处在最佳状态
Rob: Honey!
Beth Ann: Why is your boss here?
Rob: He probably came to get his briefcase.
Beth Ann: Could you give me a moment before you open the door?
Rob: Definitely.
