在东西方的相互观望中，水墨是中国文化在西方语境下最具民族性的表达方式，这无疑正是从广东快车，到徐冰、谷文达，乃至蔡国强这些活跃在全球领域的当代艺术家更多以“水墨”媒介创作的原因。在这些颇具观念和实验性的艺术作品中，水墨更多以一种创作手段和媒材，乃至于一种美学和精神价值观存在。“水墨”在此处成为一种打破边界、包容万物的载体，在这个载体上长出了现代艺术及当代艺术理论框架下的装置、影像还有行为，在这一脉络下，“水墨”的触角还可以往哪里延伸？这些是延伸了水墨的生命力还是根本和水墨毫无关系？
水墨，同时也是西方凝视中国文化的艺术焦点，但国际视野，这个看似处于边界之外，没有传统包袱的观看角度，对水墨的理解是否又如同我们所想象的那样，同样是从当代艺术的视角出发的呢？在东西视野之下，当代水墨又能碰撞出怎样的火花？
In any dialogue about Chinese and Western culture, ink is the most representative art form of China. This is why contemporary artists, such as Xu Bing, Gu Wenda and Cai Guoqiang who have been active in the global field of art have chosen ink. Ink represents the aesthetic and spiritual values of their conceptual and experimental art works. Ink becomes a special carrier that crosses many boundaries and expresses many ideas. Ink has developed many different art forms including installation, video and even performance art. When we appreciate these art works, we have a lot of questions: since these works do not seem to be obviously related to ink art, should they still be called ink art?If we see these works as an extension of the vitality of traditional ink art, how will ink art change in the future? Ink is also the focus for Westerners looking at Chinese art and culture. But from an international perspective, outside the boundaries and without the burden of tradition, does a Westerner have the same view about ink art?
