LOS ANGELES 2941 EXPOSITION BOULEVARD

During my trip in Los Angeles I created this series leading up to my collaborative exhibition in the Torrance Art Museum.
I paid a visit to the St. Basil church, located on Wilshire Boulevard, in the Wilshire district. It was built between 1967-69. This church is a fascinating structure in the Brutalist style. Built with 12 angular vertical towers made from rough texture concrete and separated by irregular shafts ofstained glass. The three-dimensional colored glass windows showed gradients of yellow, and combinations of green and reddish pink colors. At some spots the glass shafts fell into the shades of the concrete towers, turning dark, obscuring the vivid colors.

SAINTE MARIE DE LA TOURETTE CHAPEL

Recently I traveled to the monastery where I stayed overnight in one of the hundred ‘cells’ where back in the days monks in training used to live. I was received very hospitable by the friars and as aguest I was allowed to wander around almost the entire building, attend the services in the small chapel and the church and have shared meals in the large eating room together with other guests from different countries.
During the service I noticed the minimalist layout brings a meditative atmosphere whereas the painted light sluices make for a colourful contrast in the dark surroundings. For this series I used the extraordinary light operation of the painted light sluices as starting point.

UNITÉ D'HABITATION DE MARSEILLE DIXIÈME ÉTAGE

Especially the corridor, it was scarcelylit, with a low ceiling and glossy black floor which created a dark and mysterious yet spectacular experience to walk through as it seemed to be endless. In this series I visualised the daily walking through the corridor to and from the apartment.
TEXTILE NOTES (BONNETERIE BOSTEELS-DE SMETH AALST)

During my visit to a former textile factoryin Aalst (Bonneterie Bosteels-De Smeth) I found remnantsof the textile manufacturing like yarn, knitting machines, ceramic weights, time tables and posters. I used the colours and structures ofthese tools and materials and translated them into painting notes.

NEW YORK TRAVELNOTES

During my stay in New York I translated each day into an overall impression of the day, a note a day. From beginning a new day fresh and clear to being over-stimulated and thereby having a blurry view at the end of the day, walking the streets both day and night.
STOREHOUSE LUMINOSITY NOTES
