Still, China is quickerto embracechange than outsiders might suppose. Ms Li recalls the traditional line: “Raise children to care for you when you get old.” But her children have demanding jobs, and she hates askingthem totake too much time off. Norare hired helpers the solution. When her husband loses control of his bowels, no hired helper will clean him, she says matter-of-factly. Such helpers are “very impatient”. The Chinese once believed that only bad children send their parents to care homes, sheconcedes. “We don’t think that way anymore.” 中国创新求变的速度之快，令外界始料未及。李女士想起中国的那句老话“养儿防老”，但她的子女都有各自的工作需要劳心费力，而她也不喜欢要求孩子们请太多的假。雇佣保姆亦非良策。李女士实事求是地说，自从她丈夫肠胃失禁以后，没有一个保姆愿意为他擦洗。这些保姆“很不耐烦”。李女士承认，过去中国人认为，只有不孝的子女才会送父母去养老院，“而现在我们已经改变了这种观念”。
本段的段落结构是提出论点——举例论证。第一句是本段的topic sentence,开门见山点明本段的主旨是中国创新求变的速度远超外界想象;
接下来,以李女士家庭的遭遇为例，具体阐述了中国“养儿防老”的传统观念面临挑战；
结尾，以李女士的话“现在，我们已改变了这种观念。”来呼应开头的主题句，从养老的侧面，折射出中国变化速度之快。
第一句：Still, China is quickerto embracechange than outsiders might suppose. 中国创新求变的速度之快，令外界始料未及。
1.原文在表达中国变化速度加快时，用的句型是China is quickerto embracechange；这里要总结一个很有用的写作句式和翻译思维，即中文里的动词往往可以用英文中对应的形容词比较级。
比如本句中的be quicker to 对应动词“加快”quicken，accelerate，speed up；以后，我们在翻译或者写作时可以套用这样的结构，使句式富于变化，语言活泼地道。
再如，《经济学人》在一篇谈到外国家长反对暑期过长的文章里，有这样一句话：

年轻人反对延长学年。

政府工作报告里也有类似结构的表达：

2.embrace是外刊经常使用的一个词，这里我们着重谈谈它的用法：
(1). embrace既可以做名词，又可以做动词，这个词最基本的意思是“拥抱、怀抱”；
e.g.They embraced and promised to keep in touch.
He held her in a warm embrace.
(2). 欣然接受，支持（变革、政治体制、观点等），信奉（宗教、信仰等）。
本段中embrace就是取其“欣然接受，支持变革”的意思，比如to embrace democracy/feminism/Islam信奉民主 / 男女平等主义 / 伊斯兰教
(3). embrace还有“包括；包含”的意思；
e.g. The talks embraced a wide range of issues.
第二、三句：Ms Li recalls the traditional line:“Raise children to care for you when you get old.” But her children have demanding jobs, and she hates askingthem to take too much time off. 李女士想起中国的那句老话“养儿防老”，但她的子女都有各自的工作需要劳心费力，而她也不喜欢要求孩子们请太多的假。
1. the traditional line, line在这里是熟词僻义，“文字”，即word的意思，根据本段语境，灵活翻译为“中国的那句老话”。 line做文字讲时，可以代表下列意思：
（1）歌词；诗行the words of a song or poem；
e.g. I can only remember the first two lines of that song.
我只记得那首歌的头两句歌词。
（2）（戏剧或电影的）台词，对白；
e.g. a line from the film ‘Casablanca’
电影《卡萨布兰卡》里的一句话
2.raise children to care for you when you get old：养儿防老
raise vt. 是个多义词，除了常见的“增加、提高”外，还有以下用法：
(1)抚养，养育；培养；比如这里的 raise children，可用bring up作同义替换；又如:
e.g They were both raised in the South.他们俩都是在南方长大的。
They raised her (as) a Catholic. 他们让她从小就信天主教。
（2）筹募；征集；召集；
e.g to raise a loan筹集贷款
（3）提及、引起；导致；
e.gThe book raises many important questions .
这本书提出了许多重要问题。

3. demanding：adj. 这个词用来形容事情困难、费力、难做。
(1) (of a piece of work 工作)要求高的；需要高技能（或耐性等）的；费力的;
e.g.The work is physically demanding.
这工作需要有很好的体力。
(2) (of a person 人)要求极严的；苛求的；难满足的
e.g.a demanding boss苛刻的老板；
4. hate doing sth：固定搭配，hate在这里不能理解为“恨”，而是不愿意、极不情愿的意思；
5. take too much time off：请太多的假，take off 固定搭配，请假、休假的意思；
第四、五、六句：Norare hired helpers the solution. When her husbandloses control of his bowels, no hired helper will clean him, she says matter-of-factly. Such helpers are “very impatient”. 雇佣保姆亦非良策。李女士实事求是地说，自从她丈夫肠胃失禁以后，没有一个保姆愿意为他擦洗。这些保姆“很不耐烦”。
1. Nor are hired helpers the solution. 否定词Nor置句首时，句子的主谓成分要倒装，起强调的作用。
本句的正常语序是Hired helpers are not the solution, either.这个句式在写作中应用很广，我们可以借鉴以丰富语言的表达。
2. loses control of his bowels：肠胃失禁；bowels美 ['baʊəlz]，是肠，内脏的意思；
3. matter-of-factly：adv.实事求是地，就事论事地；不露声色地，
第七句：The Chinese once believed that only bad children send their parents to care homes, she concedes. “We don’t think that way anymore.” 李女士承认，过去中国人认为，只有不孝的子女才会送父母去养老院，“而现在我们已经改变了这种观念”。
1.care homes养老院，也可以说nursing homes
2.concede：v. 承认、让步、允许，这个词在使用时要注意词义所蕴含的感情色彩
（1）承认，（常指不情愿地承认某事属实或合乎逻辑）：( rather formal ) to admit, often unwillingly, that sth is true or logical，concede在本段即是这层意思；再如：
He was forced to concede (that) there might be difficulties.
他被迫承认可能有困难。
（2）concede还有“（尤指勉强地）让与，让步；允许”的意思；
e.g.The President was obliged to concede power to the army.
总统被迫把权力让给军队。
Women were only conceded full voting rights in the 1950s.
妇女在20世纪50年代才被容许完全享有选举权。
