If daily life stands for reality while wonderland stands for fantasy, then what gardens do is to bring wonderland into daily life. The typical pattern and the fundamental demand to construct a garden is to enable people to enjoy the nature’s pleasure even though they don’t step out of their home.” ——YE Fang
Architecture has been seeking for the notion of modernity and inheritance since postmodernism. What can we extract from the traditional Chinese architecture? Garden is regarded as the essence of the traditional Chinese architecture, while the essence of garden is inspired by the Chinese landscape painting. Gardens connect the space to space. There are canonical forms for the halls, pavilions, corridors and bridges for the garden construction, therefore, the different combination of these forms will contribute to different spatial experience. Nowadays, it is not easy and not necessary for us to find places to build gardens. We are looking for the inner spirit of the garden rather than just aiming for the shell of it. We made an attempt to build gardens indoor by employing the halls, pavilions, corridors and bridges in various scales. Here, we create space to tell stories. These villas in Shanwei are set on the sea coast, which had become a bright scenery line of the new city. These five villas function as guest rooms under an independent resort hotel. FEI Architecture aims to provide the guests a growing home with a homely, intimate atmosphere. The guests are not just travelers who pass by, but children who coming home. The total indoor area covers 80 square meters. We are striving to create an experimental space through this project – to blur the boundary of indoor and outdoor by creating indoor gardens to bring nature’s beauty in our daily life.
Gardened Corner
When you step indoor from the outside, you will find a small garden, the sunshine scattered from the skylight with dancing shadows, you would like to sit under a tree and change your shoes before entering indoor. When you look up, there are small windows set on both sides.

Stoned Corner
With the sun setting down, when you enter the space, you will see the nostalgic wall, the little garden will leap I your eyes when you turn around – it is actually an open bathroom, when you push the wooden door on the other side, you will access with the bedroom. To accommodate with the climate, the old houses from the 1980s in Southern China employ the grille panels had been widely used for the wall masonry of the corridors, which also enhance the ventilation and add details to the space. In this villa, the grille panels are multi-functional – they can be a window, they can be a wall, they can also be a chair. Here, is a place with story.

Roofed Bridge
As soon as you walk through the door, there is a dimmed corridor, you can see the glistening waves on the sea. The silhouette of the corridor seems an attractive, vibrant painting. The light shreds on you from the left window when you pass through, you will find another garden and see a bathtub set under the shadows of the tree, however, you can’t really reach the bathtub yet. You have to pass through the bedroom and open the secret door to access the garden. Bathing under the sun would be a great joy.

Transitional Boundary
Though the space is not large, but it is well-equipped. There is one bedroom and one living room. You can access to the living room through the stone path. And you will see where the bedroom locates as soon as you turn around in the space. There is an illusionistic chemical reaction co-produced by the glass brick wall, the sea, the garden, the lounge island and the sun. The subtle feelings of the overlapped space make you feel that all the boundaries has been blurred.

Tranquil Corridor
The division of the space is subtle, the wall that presents a curvy form enhances the ventilation, to some extends, it is more like a windshield. The leaf-like, curvy-shaped materials are actually made of pottery baguettes- a common material for the outer wall. The interiorization of the material is also a way of building gardens indoor.

As the buddha says: “the buddha’s mountain and the mustard seed — to insert the largest thing into the smallest one”, which means the space is compatible for both large and small things. “Much in little, less is more” is the core value of Chinese garden design. We are trying to build an independent, spiritual home with gardens in this 80-square-meter villa.
