重返涩谷

挑选这期节目的曲目时正值世界杯期间，mat osman受朋友之邀到国内举办DJ set，我被朋友委托胡乱写一份宣传软稿。软稿，软稿，便是没话找话，于平地强行装逼。那天早上念头一歪，就在电脑上敲出这段话：

“此时我想到一个可笑的好像无需去问的问题：当年在意大利的贝纳尔多·贝托鲁奇是怎么听到mazzy star？当年在美国的索菲亚·科波拉是怎么听到the Jesus and mary chain？当年在新西兰的彼得·杰克逊又是怎么听到cocteau twins？那并不是两个端点一条直线便可抵达，我猜那是因为当年音乐界所存在的一位又一位gatekeeper。

gatekeeper可以是一手建立起rough trade销售渠道其辐射力直达全欧洲的geoff travis，可以是曾在rough trade兼职的daniel miller，可以是在纽约和伦敦来回奔波将the smiths、echo and the bunnymen、depeche mode、aphex twin等等推广至北美地区的sire老总——seymour stein（daniel miller的好友），自然也可以是一名DJ。DJ在英国甚至硬生生创造过音乐风潮——所谓【northern soul】，说穿了不就是一帮英国北部DJ耗去无数精力财力在成吨仿motown流行乐的作品（在美国被忽视被冷遇）中挖出宝来，让那些鲜活的律动与李小龙一样成为ian brown那一代曼彻斯特年轻人心中不灭的记忆。当然，每一位英国乐迷都无法忘怀john peel，前些日子mat osman曾经的团友&真suede吉他手bernard butler还跟《long live vinyl》杂志的记者分享第一次在john peel的节目里听到【this charming man】,第一次在唱片店订购the smith单曲碟《hand in glove》的珍贵回忆。”

键盘敲着敲着，心头有点莫名发热，于是到书架上翻出那本《last night a DJ saved my life》，找到那些红笔标注过的地方，回到电脑前继续敲出这段话：

“我相信mat osman深知什么是DJ，或者说DJ的意义，DJ存在的必要性，尤其在如今这样一个gatekeeper四散消失、在线流媒体将音乐背景化情景化咖啡化健身化慢跑化却对好音乐熟视无睹的年代（音乐价值已劣化至不如一杯手冲咖啡）。在音乐共和国里，DJ一词还跟摄影师或者剪辑师一词一样，还具有那么一丁点的重量，DJ自然不是像steve aoki那样对音乐毫无审美毫无鉴赏力生而为人却不知美为何物的百大傻逼，那DJ是什么？

翻开将近二十年前的《last night a DJ saved my life》，一段段话言犹在耳，摘抄如下：

A DJ's job is to channel the vast ocean of recorded sound into a single unforgettable evening.

Taste is key: can you recognize good music and can you separate the great from the merely good？

So the DJ is part shaman, part technician, part collector part selector and part musical evangelist. Doubtless he is craftsman, the expert at making people dance. But is the DJ an artist? Like the musician, he can be.

Great DJing is not just about tricksy mixing, it’s much more about finding amazing new songs and being able to pull them out at just the right moment. More than anything else, it’s how sensitively a DJ can interact with a crowd。

While a band or a musician can only be themselves, a DJ can distil millions of man-hours of musical genius into a single set. Imagine a grand tapestry made by stitching together pieces of the finest handmade cloth. Seen up close its beauty comes from the skill of the weavers and embroiderers who made the different fabrics, but seen from a distance it has a beauty of a different scale，a more imposing grandeur that comes from the overall pattern or design. Like the maker of such a tapestry, the DJ is an artist of a different order. The DJ is a music editor, a metamusician, he makes music out of other music.

DJ makes a living by filtering information, he makes sense of the confusing mass of musical information that bombard us (there are hundreds of dance singles released each week). There’s no way that we could find all the great music within our favourite genre, so we rely on DJs to do it for us.

The DJ should concentrate on ‘finding good tunes to play‘ rather than ‘attracting meaning from the data cloud’.”

软文的对象是mat osman，但那天早上我心中的对象，我心中的gatekeeper或者DJ却是小沢健二，小山田圭吾，小西康阳等人。重返涩谷，从字面上理解自然是重温这些音乐人的作品和他们借用引用的【梗】，更是重新体验一个小白刚面对音乐花花世界时的怦然心动。当然，这个花花世界，这份怦然心动要留到专题的下半部分去细说。
