The Morning Sun Team Marks its Members’ Birthdays with a Monthly Celebration Game
The members of the Morning Sun Team face great pressure in their daily jobs which explains their weekend mornings at Sheshan’s picturesque forest golf course. At Sheshan Golf Club, members relieve themselves of their workload and become a group of “kidults” who seek health, happiness, and friendship through golfing.
Competing on the Course
Being wise and innovative bosses in the business world, the members of the Morning Sun Team love to contribute to the course which has brought much joy and happiness to their lives.
The Wanyuan Cup is held after the HSBC Champions, the period when the course is at its prime. They practice the tradition of having a round of golf to commemorate their members’ birthdays. In addition, they are responsible for numerous golfing events like the 50-60 Laide Cup Team Match, Hole in One Competition, and other special events.
The member(s) will be the gracious sponsors for the prizes of the birthday celebration game. Anyone who loses the game to the birthday person is subject to a "fine" that is added to the prize, i.e. those who are 1 to 10 strokes higher than the birthday person must pay a fine of 100 Yuan, or 200 Yuan for 11 to 20 strokes. The birthday person has the right to decide how the premium will be divided amongst the winners. These rules add a degree of challenge and excitement to the game. Given that the members value friendship and adopt an easy attitude towards life, it is no wonder such rules are not a bother to them.
Lunch is a simple affair which encompasses a bowl of birthday noodles for each member which was paid for by the birthday person. In return, the team will prepare a birthday cake. The birthday person traditionally conducts a wine-tasting session with his bottle of fine wine. Each participating members will receive a complimentary gift.
Both Jiang Aiqing and Zou Wenlong were born in early February. Hence, a dual birthday celebration game was held this year to add more spice to the event. Both generously contributed a large premium of ¥5000 coupled with two bottles of fine aged wine along with fine gifts for each member. Everyone had a marvelous time with the warm hospitality of the birthday hosts.
The team captain sent a warm reminder before this important dual birthday celebration game that was scheduled for 6th of February. All members tried their best to attend – some flew all the way from Thailand or Bangladesh whilst some finished their business in Beijing in a hurry and arrived in Shanghai the night before the game.
It is telling that the name of the team, The Morning Sun Team tells of the team’s preference to tee off early in the morning. Our members arrived at La Toscana just past 7 o’clock where they were consumed two eggs to start off the birthday celebration. Despite the struggle to finish the eggs, the thought of the eggs’ effect on their physical capabilities motivated them.
The weather forecast was not optimistic and the previous day’s weather conditions were not encouraging. However, the heavens were kind that day and the rain stopped just before tee off. The pin was set at a difficult position, causing problems even for the skilful player, Liang Junfeng. Due to his over-enthusiasm, Liang made four strokes on the first hole. The competition is too intense to be put into words, but it was agreed that everyone enjoyed the 18- hole game.
Celebration at the Wine & Cigar Bar
After the game, members took a hot shower before gathering at the Wine & Cigar Bar. Jiang Aiqing was already waiting and comfortably smoking a Cuban cigar. Coffee was prepared. Lunch was served with a wide range of fine cuisine coupled with two bottles of fine wine which were poured into the decanters to aerate the wine. A toast was proposed to the two birthday individuals’ good health before commencing on the gastronomic experience. The wine flowed freely as the members indulged in the lap of luxury and good company. Having the luxury of indulgence in such a fine dining experience, it was a splendid moment for the members.
Tian Hao, the actuary on the team, had volunteered to collect the score cards and calculate the scores while the others rested. Zou Wenlong’s exquisite skills and good luck allowed him to tie with the net par and win first prize, returning the prize premium back into his own pocket. Three other members won lucky draw consolation prizes of 500 Yuan each. However, the captain imposed a 50% tax on the prize money to contribute to the team fund. The tax was a significant step to affirming their treasured relationship as well as filling the coffers of the team fund.
The sum of ages of the two birthday people happened to be 100 this year, which gave significance to naming this a “100 Years Old” game. This led to the members desiring to live to an older age to possibly participate in a “200 Years Old” game in the future.
This month’s birthday celebration game received strong support from Sheshan Golf Club. Both Chairman of the Board Mr. Richard Cheung and General Manager Mr. Roger Foo came to propose birthday toasts. Upon Roger’s request an event writeup of this February’s dual birthday celebration game, I wrote this article to share with all members at Sheshan. I am proud to call Sheshan Golf Club my home!
