【文书案例】拿下CMU INI硕士录取的essay分享~~~ Q1: Briefly explain your objective in pursuing the master’s degree you are applying for. I am applying for Information Networking (MSIN) and Information Security Technology and Management (MSISTM) programs. Both programs offered a combined education in information technology and business management, which matches my career goal of assuming a leadership position in an IT company. It is important for a leader to not only have solid knowledge base of a specific field, but also have a broad vision and strong interpersonal skills. The interdisciplinary nature of INI will allow me to study a variety of technical courses and work along with people from different fields. Thus, I can acquire the essential technical knowledge as well as interpersonal skills through your training. I have great interest in Information Security and Information Networking, and already have extensive project experience in both fields. At graduate level, I want to seek challenges in solving real-world problems relating to security or networking in the context of big data. As advanced techniques such as machine learning and data mining are being applied to solving big data problems, new threats are also introduced. For instance, privacy has become a big issue for everyone in face of the fast development of social networks and data mining techniques. I wish to provide solutions to such problems and devote myself in making the next generation of Internet more intelligent and secure. CMU has the strongest alumni network in the IT field. It will be my great honor to become a member of this family. Q2: Describe your background in engineering; computer science and other fields particularly related to your objectives, include any industrial or commercial work experience. 1500 With the desire to tackle real-world problems, I started an R&D internship at Alphabetics Research working on large-scale natural language processing for guiding stock investment. In this project, we target at inferring the influence of economic news on stock price. With tons of data at hand, I keep myself updated towards big data techniques, and first implement a streaming logistic regression framework, which processes one example at a time using stochastic gradient descent, thus avoiding the need to fit all data into memory. Within there is a hashing scheme for effective feature storage and look-up. This online framework will be particularly useful when processing streaming news data as which is the case in practice. I also evaluated several popular algorithms such as Support Vector Machine on smaller set of data for comparison. Experimental results show that my online learning package compares favorably to other methods while being substantially more scalable. Currently I am working on running learning algorithms on Hadoop clusters to further improve scalability. Q3: Outline your research experience. My research enthusiasm stems from a research project on testing based vulnerability detection in ZigBee MAC Layer. After extensive review in the literature of vulnerability detection, I found it difficult to employ traditional Fuzzy methods due to the resource limitations on ZigBee. Thus we designed a tester that generated and transmitted elaborated frames to the target nodes. The tester did not produce any meaningful data at first. After careful examination, I noticed that the problem was caused by hardware compatibility and figured out the solution. To further ensure efficiency, we incorporated a Border Conditions Algorithm based on single field border value testing, and a hostile test framework based on attacker simulation. Our system outperformed previous methods because of its effectiveness and efficiency. I further noticed consistent network crashes under tests with certain patterns, and identified for the first time an exceptional frame triggering those crashes. Finally, our findings were published in International Journal of Grid and Utility Computing. Through this project, I not only completed my tasks with high quality, but also pushed myself to bring up novel findings, confronting resource-constrained scenarios, and gaining abilities on C++ programming. I also learned how to express thoughts and research findings in academic writing, which is as important as doing research itself. Q4: Please describe any experiences where you have demonstrated leadership skills and abilities. These examples may include academic, professional, extracurricular and/or community activities. And please identify any leadership qualities that you would bring to the INI that you believe would enhance and add to our community and reputation. 1. Captain of BUPT Cheerleading Team As the captain of BUPT cheerleading team, I managed the training schedule for 16 team members and our daily practice for school games. When I was the captain, our team received the First Prize in Beijing Cheerleading Competition in XXX (year). In order to effectively prepare our performance, I usually needed to coordinate team members’ time, make reservation of the facility and make appointments with our coach in advance. My communication and organizational skills have been improved through these experiences. 2. 3rd Prize in National Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest Beijing Division As the leader of a three-member team, I have worked with our team members closely, and our team received the 3rd Prize in National Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest Beijing Division. During our preparation for the competition, I first assigned tasks to each individual based on their professional backgrounds. For example, we had one person specifically studied on the literature review and prepared for the final presentation; one was in charge of hardware, and one did coding as his major interests. This strategy assisted us to taking the most use of our talents within the limited time. In addition, in order to encourage the cooperation among our team members, I also organized study groups so that we could help each other understand each one’s progress.
