The government’s £1.3 billion scheme to help Britain’s most troubled families has had no measurable impact on cutting crime or changing their lives for the better, an official assessment reveals.
The Troubled Families programme, launched by David Cameron after the riots in 2011, was hailed repeatedly by the former prime minister as a “real government success” that was transforming the life chances of more than 100,000 families.
As recently as June last year Mr Cameron was claiming that the programme had “turned around” 98.9 per cent of families being helped.

Some of Britain’s leading archaeologists have spoken out against plans to abolish the subject at A level amid concerns about the narrowing of the school curriculum.
Sir Tony Robinson, presenter of the television series Time Team, is among those to have backed a petition calling on the AQA exam board to review its decision. It was the last awarding body offering A-level archaeology before announcing that it would drop the subject.
