1. "Norton Anthology of English Literature, Vol. C: The Restoration and the Eighteenth Century" Greenblatt, Stephen J.; Christ, Carol T.; David, Alfred / W. W. Norton & Company
2. "Pilgrim's Progress" John Bunyan / Signet Classics
4. "Gulliver's Travels" Jonathan Swift / Penguin Classics
6. "The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia" Samuel Johnson
8. "The Rape of the Lock" Alexander Pope
10. "The Vanity of Human Wishes" Samuel Johnson
the Sentimental Journey through France and Italy(读的译本为《多情客游记》)可闲暇时阅读1-2篇,有令人心神愉悦的功效。
1. John Dryden, "Absalom and Achitophel", "Mac Flecknoe"
"an Essay of Dramatic Poesy": [Shakespeare and Ben Jonson Compared]
2. Samuel Butler, "Hudibras"
3. John Wilmot, Second Earl of Rochester:
"the Disabled Debauchee"
"the Imperfect Enjoyment"
"Upon Nothing"
"A Satire against Reason and Mankind"
4. Daniel Defoe, "Roxana":[the Cons of Marriage]
5. Lawrence Sterne, "A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy":[The Pulse]
6. Jonathan Swift, "A Modest Proposal"
7. Joseph Addison, "Spectator": 10, 519
10. Alexander Pope:
"an Essay on Criticism"
"an Essay on Man"
"Eloisa to Abelard"
11. Samuel Johnson, "Rambler": 4,60; "Dictionary": Preface; "the Preface to Shakespeare"(节选)
12. Edmund Burke, "Speech on the Conciliation with the American Colonies"
13. Thomas Gray, "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard"
14. Oliver Goldsmith, "the Deserted Village"
15. William Cowper, "the Task": Book 1 [A Landscape...][Crazy Kate], Book 3 [the Stricken Deer], Book 4 [The Winter Evening: A Brown Study]
Dryden的criticism(对其诗歌无感)。
Pope喜欢程度:an Essay on Criticism< an Essay on Man< Eloisa to Abelard。 Essay on Man重点段需背诵。
1. Wilmot, "the Complete Poems"
2. Addison&Steele, "Selections from Addison and Steele"
3. Samuel Johnson, "A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland and The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides", "Selected Essays", "Preface to Shakespeare"
//分隔符// 10月7日补充:最近在整理诗歌的时候又看了一遍喜欢的诗,越读越喜欢Stricken Deer。果然精神崩溃者写的诗更有深度。附诗如下:
From "Task, Book2": [The Stricken Deer]
by William Cowper
I was a stricken deer, that left the herd
Long since; with many an arrow deep infixed
My panting side was charged, when I withdrew
To seek a tranquil death in distant shades.
There was I found by one who had himself
Been hurt by the archers. In his side he bore,
And in his hands and feet, the cruel scars.
With gentle force soliciting the darts,
He drew them forth, and healed, and bade me live.
Since then, with few associates, in remote
And silent woods I wander, far from those
My former partners of the peopled scene;
With few associates, and not wishing more.
Here much I ruminate, as much I may,
With other views of men and manners now
Than once, and others of a life to come.
I see that all are wanderers, gone astray
Each in his own delusions; they are lost
In chase of fancied happiness, still wooed
And never won. Dream after dream ensues;
And still they dream that they shall still succeed,
And still are disappointed. Rings the world
With the vain stir. I sum up half mankind
And add two-thirds of the remaining half,
And find the total of their hopes and fears
Dreams, empty dreams.
