Wordsworth in Hualien?

Subtitled “The Education of Young Poet,” Columbia University Press’s edition of Yang Mu’s Memories of Mount Qilai combines three brief separate volumes of memoir by the much-admired Taiwanese poet, the author of 24 books and the winner of the 2013 Newman Prize in Chinese Literature. Here readers of English will find a vivid account of Yang Mu’s early development (he was born under Japanese colonial rule and the book closes in the early 1950s.) But they will also find opportunities to complicate and to strengthen their critical senses of what Yang Mu and other writers hope will one day be known as “Taiwanese literature,” rather than a provincial “Chinese literature from Taiwan.”
Yang Mu’s verse autobiographical prose, like his verse, relies on close observation of Taiwan’s landscape, flora, and fauna for imagery and metaphor. Yet if the humidity, the light, the tang in the breeze—the embodied experiences of the young Yang Mu—are distinctly Taiwanese, his themes are broadly human. Each anecdote is fixed to lovingly-recalled local particulars, and so it is indeed a Taiwanese literature we read, even in translation. Yet my immersion in the strongest passages of Memories of Mount Qilai is as deep as the immersion I feel reading Pepys’ diaries, or Kafka’s journals, or certain essays of Montaigne. If the Eurocentric web of connections I make to his memoir betrays my inability to respond to powers in Yang Mu’s work which are distinctly not Western, it is also evidence, I believe, that there is nothing provincial (in any pejorative sense) about Yang Mu’s achievement. I hope it does not diminish my respect for a nascent Taiwanese literature to celebrate connections Yang Mu makes to Western authors and texts—he took a PhD at Berkeley, has translated poems by W.B. Yeats into Chinese, and was a fellow at the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa. And when I say that I love his revision of Wordsworth’s “stolen boat” episode from The Prelude, for example, I don’t think that’s merely because I recognize the parallel.
The lines from Wordsworth below are some of the most beloved in Romantic literature:
One summer evening (led by her) I found
A little boat tied to a willow tree
Within a rocky cove, its usual home.
Straight I unloosed her chain, and stepping in
Pushed from the shore. It was an act of stealth
And troubled pleasure, nor without the voice
Of mountain-echoes did my boat move on;
Leaving behind her still, on either side,
Small circles glittering idly in the moon,
Until they melted all into one track
Of sparkling light. But now, like one who rows,
Proud of his skill, to reach a chosen point
With an unswerving line, I fixed my view
Upon the summit of a craggy ridge,
The horizon’s utmost boundary; far above
Was nothing but the stars and the grey sky.
She was an elfin pinnace; lustily
I dipped my oars into the silent lake,
And, as I rose upon the stroke, my boat
Went heaving through the water like a swan;
When, from behind that craggy steep till then
The horizon’s bound, a huge peak, black and huge,
As if with voluntary power instinct,
Upreared its head. I struck and struck again,
And growing still in stature the grim shape
Towered up between me and the stars, and still,
For so it seemed, with purpose of its own
And measured motion like a living thing,
Strode after me. With trembling oars I turned,
And through the silent water stole my way
Back to the covert of the willow tree;
There in her mooring-place I left my bark, —
And through the meadows homeward went, in grave
And serious mood; but after I had seen
That spectacle, for many days, my brain
Worked with a dim and undetermined sense
Of unknown modes of being; o’er my thoughts
There hung a darkness, call it solitude
Or blank desertion. No familiar shapes
Remained, no pleasant images of trees,
Of sea or sky, no colours of green fields;
But huge and mighty forms, that do not live
Like living men, moved slowly through the mind
By day, and were a trouble to my dreams.

From the opening lines of Memories of Mount Qilai we learn that Yang Mu, like Wordsworth, feels as if his native landscape speaks to him—later we understand that he frequently takes such instruction when he steps beyond social boundaries. No moral authority accosts the young Wordsworth as he takes a boat that does not belong to him; it’s the mountains that address him, and it’s not at all clear that they disapprove of his antics. Likewise, one day a middle-school aged Yang Mu skips classes to spend the day rowing alone in a rented boat on a river that passes under a bridge his classmates use to get to and from campus. As you’ll see, below, his fellow students can’t or don’t see him from that bridge, but the mountains and rivers and the ocean seem to supervise his every move, and, as with Wordsworth, his every move is both child’s play and literary trope. In Yang Mu’s version, a semi-tropical one, the mountain that looms over Wordsworth is a both a volcanic peak and a wall of water…
…Looking across the river, I shouted to a tall skinny man in the hut opposite: “If I want to rent a boat for an hour, what’ll I do with my bike?”
I heard that familiar music drifting from off in the distance.
…He said, “Okay.” He then bent down behind me again, and I wondered what he was up to. The moment I turned to look behind me, I felt the boat move forward and saw him pushing forcefully with his right hand and, pleased, he shouted happily, “So long….” The small boat left the dock at the stone steps and smoothly and calmly shot toward the heart of the river.
The river flowed down from the majestic heights and boundless green mountains, but not necessarily from the depths of the mountain chain. I once followed it upstream back to its source; later, one hot summer morning I rode my bike along its banks and reached the source before noon. What amazed me the most at the time was how the source could be so narrow but the shallow flowing water so clear. Rocks, small and large, were scattered all about. It was as if the spirits of the mountain and the ghosts of the river, along with the mischievous tree and flower spirits, had contended to arrange them in a dream-like display. On both sides of the small, narrow trickle, shrubs and vines grew thickly, with bright clusters of white flowers—the name of which I never determined—blossoming amid the dense leaves. The riverbed resembled a dish of pearls inserted between two banks of jade. The spring water descended, flowing clear and shallow as usual, but the riverbed suddenly widened, inundated only by the torrents caused by the typhoons. Usually it flowed at a trickle in a calm and tranquil fashion without attracting attention. The flow of water increased as the river neared Mount Milun, flowing clear and deep around its small southern foot, ever so quietly, bathing the unbroken reeds, wild celery, violets, and ginger. Huge flame trees on the bank cast reflections of their leaves and flowers on the surface of the water, sometimes even dropping leaves and flowers to gently float on the leisurely rising and falling waves, bobbing slowly away. The slope of the bank behind the trees was covered with wildflowers. Beyond the bank was an old residential street of Hualien. I never believed that that clear, shallow, dreamlike display that originated in a dish of pearls and flowed between two banks of jade could really instill fear with the sound of flowing water from behind a long bank built behind the flame trees.
I could hear that unbroken song drifting toward me. Was it the music of the river? Or was it the creation stirred deep within my heart, surging and swelling, gentle and gloomy, omnipresent? It also sounded like an echo fading off into nothingness….
My little boat hesitated for a moment, unsure of which direction to proceed. Downstream, the river became extraordinarily wide and the opposite bank rose abruptly like a cliff and, for a distance of several hundred meters from east to west, the flowing water unexpectedly paused in an ancient, thickly forested lake, placid and quiet, surreptitiously whispering that repeated and familiar tune. In the old days, this stretch of river was called Army Bay.
…I rowed with both oars, heading down stream. I knew the ocean was not too far away and was a little scared, though perhaps even happier still.
“What if, what if a mountain torrent suddenly came crashing down?”
“A mass of water swept out of the mountains with incredible speed, surging toward my little boat. Even if it didn’t knock me into the water, it was strong enough to sweep me to the mouth of the river, rising and sinking, all the way to the salty seawater, where, as the first burst of the torrent collided with the ocean waves, I would lose consciousness. I’d be like a piece of water grass torn from its roots, drifting in the Pacific Ocean near shore among shimmering schools of colorful fish, swaying amid the coral reef, where finally and slowly, like water grass licked ardently and irresistibly by the sea, I would be cleansed, leaving a transparent spirit and weightless soul.”
“You’d be dead long before.”
“The first time doesn’t count.” I continued, “I was embraced by the cold, quickly flowing spring water. Everything happened so quickly I was taken by surprise, right? Frightening or sweet, I couldn’t say. Happy or sad, I couldn’t say. It’s hard to say if it wouldn’t be a comfortable, relaxed way to die in the tender, fresh water like clouds, spring grass, velvet, a song that never stops rising, an offering, becoming religious. Then let it come. Let the torrent come quickly, taking me by surprise, carrying me away, while I still possess true and far-fetched love. I am so pure and untainted. If I can die with such purity, amid the blessed sounds of fowl, animals, and insects, comforted by aquatic creatures, attended by plants, then let me die, die unconscious, or maybe it couldn’t be called death.”
“What kind of death counts as a real death?”
“What kind of death counts…”
At that moment, my small boat had passed the watercourse under the large bridge between the two bridge piers and, like a water strider unconsciously pausing in the swiftly moving current, was lifted and sent on by the water, as if accompanied by song, soft as an angel’s exhortation, utterly calm; the wake blossomed like a bouquet of spring flowers, withering at once, drifting away, but then never slacking or dispersing.
“What counts as real?”
But the sound I heard, beyond being entangled in my own questioning, was the sound of bicycles braking high on the slope above the north end of the bridge, the sound of bicycle chains.
It knew it was the sound of school being let out. They must have lowered the flag, listened to the speech of exhortation, dispersed, and set off for home. Nine hundred male students were surging out, swinging identical book bags in the same color and with the same weight, their hats on their heads, or in their hands, or, like mine, thrust in their book bags. I didn’t attend the flag-lowering ceremony today. Starting around noon, I couldn’t sit still as a strange, unformed melody floated through my mind, as if from the other side of a high, dark ancient wall someone abandoned themselves to chanting for me a fragmented but still special and recognizable song of prudence, pronouncing words that were difficult to understand but occasionally stressing a certain expression, seemingly also what I frequently heard between sleep and wakefulness. I looked around me: the distant sky, sea, prostrate mountains, the aged banyan tree, hibiscus, canna lilies, and the beehive under the eaves, steadily growing larger by the day. “How am I to let go, be free, release myself, and be different from others?” I repeatedly asked myself such silly questions and then when totally exhausted, ‘How can I prove I am different from others?” The blackboard was covered with proper nouns: “Age of Enlightenment,” “feudal lord,” “serf,” “guild,” “Galileo,” “isolationism,” and “indulgence.” I descended the steps of the path by the swimming pool and walked along the stone wall beside the playing field, my book bag slung over my left shoulder, my hat in my book bag, careful not to stumble in the ditch, past the flagpole, walking lightly across the slope newly planted with flame trees to the bicycle shed, quietly unlocking my bike and pushing it out, holding it with both hands, through the small gate and, by the time I was noticed by Old Jin, who was patching a tire, I had rode off swiftly and was gone….
“What if the mountain torrent came rushing down right now?”
“It would take ages for the water to reach here.”
“What if, just supposing what if, the torrent had already started rushing down and was just about to reach here, surging toward you, right this minute as you are rowing back.…”
The torrent was about to cover me, turn over my pitiful little boat and me with a gigantic and vigorous force, sinking us. No one would know I had been submerged in this way and died. The skinny guy would certainly not open his mouth about renting me a boat. Someone showed up during school hours with a book bag to row a boat, perturbed in appearance, abiding without moving by the bridge pier after the sun had disappeared behind the mountains. He knew better than to mention it. Ask Old Jin? Old Jin would say that he might have heard a student at the bicycle shed before flag lowering, but he was patching Teacher Xu’s tire and cleaning his bike, and didn’t have a chance to see who it was. But then again, perhaps no one would even think of asking Old Jin. I sank and rolled along the bottom and was swept down the river to the sea.
The small boat ran aground on the beach, upside down.
Perhaps that was a very good ending. Perhaps ending is not the right word—perhaps it was a beginning. I was carried far away by the flood into the indefinite distance, the cool dark vastness. That boundless mystery and surging space, so lush and vast, all belong to me alone….

An enchanting journey up Mount Qilai
Poet Yang Mu's collection of autobiographical essays provides an evocative look into his formative years in Hualien while painting a picture of life in the 40s and 50s

If there were one word to describe acclaimed Taiwanese poet Yang Mu’s (楊牧) collection of superbly translated autobiographical essays, Memories of Mount Qilai, it would simply be “beautiful.”
From the first few lines, one can tell that the author is a poet. Starting from his childhood in sleepy, sun-baked Hualien near the end of World War II, the writing is evocative and rich with lyrical descriptions, interspersed with personal memories, thoughts and observations. Yet, the book is more than just an autobiography. It’s also a lesson in history, in politics, in culture, in anthropology — and in life itself. Not only do we learn about Yang’s formative years, we finish the book with a greater understanding of daily life in Hualien in those days, as well as the transformation of Taiwanese society from the departure of the Japanese through the first decades of Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) rule.
The text mostly consists of prose but sometimes shifts to poetry, and often it feels like a bit of both, especially in the use of sentence repetition and short stanzas. Sometimes he takes a break and provides detailed background information, such as when he delves into the history and traditions of Amis Aborigines. There’s a little bit of everything here — even some figments of his imagination — which is what makes this book so satisfying to read.
Originally called The Former Book of Mount Qilai (奇萊前書) in Chinese, it consists of three parts, which were originally separate books published between 1987 and 1997: Mountain Wind and Ocean Rain (山風海雨), Return to Degree Zero (方向歸零) and Long Ago, When We Started (昔我往矣).
Wind and Ocean Rain begins through the eyes of an introspective yet adventurous six-year-old Yang. “The flames of war burned in the distant sky, but hadn’t reached my ocean, my small city and my courtyard,” he writes, as he explores his surroundings as a carefree and very curious child.
Despite his age, Yang appears to always be yearning for something, with a strong thirst for life and knowledge that carries on through the book. The importance of the geography of Hualien is established from the very beginning. The mountains and ocean take on a life of their own. “The mountains were staunch guardians and the sea was the starting point of imagination,” he writes.
The author manages to touch on a multitude of topics in this 89-page section — ranging from the belief in ghosts to suddenly having to learn Mandarin — but, told through the lens of a precocious child in a world where time seems to stop, none of it is overwhelming.
We see events that gradually change Yang’s life: taking refuge from US airstrikes in an Aboriginal village, a crying, soon-to-be-slaughtered water buffalo, exploring the meaning of love, realizing that “humanity stank” for the first time … and finally an earthquake which symbolized the end of his childhood and the awakening of a spiritual, mythical “inkling of poetry” in his heart, a desire to create.
“There was a greater universe and that universe would naturally send me on my way ... It would be hard to say if it would be a strange and distant place, to explore, search and create, without regret,” he writes.
Another interesting part in this section is the transition to China-centric education — when Yang notices that the textbook mentions a dog running in the snow despite the lack of snow in Taiwan, and how he and his classmates have problems pronouncing the “F” sound in Mandarin.
In Back To Degree Zero, we leave the endless, hazy summers of childhood. “A 12-year-old boy, one who thought he was able to grasp love and beauty, mysterious symbols, the expression in the eyes of heaven and earth, close to poetry but lukewarm, a boy who was quiet and odd,” Yang writes.
The White Terror was in full swing, tensions were high and slogans and propaganda were the way of life. Yang has become more withdrawn, still searching, still passionate and imaginative as ever, but also growing up. “I looked at the sea with my eyes, but what I thought about in my mind was abstract ideas, one by one shaped between pictures. I was powerless to bear so many ideas,” he writes.
Yang delves deeper into the China-centric education system, as first Japanese is banned, then Hoklo (commonly known as Taiwanese). Retrocession Day (光復節) is now the beginning of Taiwanese history, and with everything before that “wiped clean as if it never existed.” Everything went back to zero to begin again, whether people liked it or not.
It is here that he starts writing, struggling to put his sentiments into words, which “remained elusive despite the sad appeals of emotion,” a process of creation that he finally experiences in an almost cathartic way, the beginnings of what would become a lifelong career.
As poetry takes over Yang’s life, it becomes not only his personal way of self-expression but also self-exploration. One passage stands out — when he argues with the local newspaper editor about the value of what was then modern poetry:
“The way I see it, most of the things in the textbooks are useless … everyday a page and a half of the paper is useless. It’s all lies. But at least what we write is what we feel.”
We go from vignette to vignette, from thoughts to events to people to fantasies, all carrying the reader on a wave through the author’s memories. Like an autobiographical essay should be, it jumps around but it flows naturally. The tone is more melancholy and realistic, but the writing remains beautiful.
It’s the end of the 50s in Long Ago, When We Started, which Yang describes as an oppressive, severe and destructive age.
In a time where one had to limit oneself, even while writing for the weekly “Free Expression” section in the local journal, Yang now searches for freedom — of the mind and soul — whether it is through skipping school and taking a solitary boat trip or reading banned books and privately discussing them with his teacher or debating poetry with a departed friend.
Some of the chapters are less rooted in reality and more in Yang’s mind. Through this last part, Yang, more mature but with the same curiosity, sensitivity and thirst, says goodbye to the mountains and ocean of his hometown.
There’s not a dull moment in the book, which leaves the reader with many thoughts, ideas, new understandings and perhaps a desire to take a fresh look inward, to cleanse the soul. This is a book that should be read more than once — after all, the writing is simply beautiful.
