Created in August 1968, the Etna DOC was thevery first in Sicily. The area covers the slopes of Mount Etna, Europe’s largestactive volcano.

Mount Etna’s soils are therefore rich of ironand copper, as well as potassium, phosphorus and magnesium.

Etna presents a number of meso-climates, asthe land climbs up from near-sea-level to more than 1200m, with its highestvineyards ranking among the highest in Italy. The climate also varies dependingon the aspect of the slopes. The average temperature in the vineyards is 14degrees lower than the rest of the island. Far from posing problems, the coolertemperatures are actually helpful, and offer the luxury of a cooler, longergrowing season.

The most commonly produced form of Etna wine is the Etna Rosso, a red made predominantly from Nerello Mascalese with up to a 20% addition of Nerello Cappuccio.
埃特纳白葡萄酒(Etna Bianco) 由至少60%的卡里坎特(Carricante)加上西西里最广泛种植的品种卡塔拉托(Catarratto)以及少量其它葡萄混酿。
Etna Bianco (white) is instead made from atleast 60% Carricante, backed up by Sicily's most widely planted white grape, Catarratto, as well as some minor additions.

There are three main viticultural areas on Mt.Etna: the East-facing area, where the altitude goes from 400 to 900m, andCarricante grows at its best; a North-facing area with an altitude between 400 and 800m, where the best reds are produced; and the South-facing area, with analtitude between 600 and1000m.

North of Mt. Etna is the Mamertino di Milazzo DOC, introduced in 2004. The area is influenced by the presence of threevolcanoes in its proximity: besides Mt. Etna, the volcanic islands of Vulcanoand Stromboli are located nearby.

Mamertino di Milazzo is a traditional, true'Sicilian' wine, being made from three of the island's most idiosyncraticvarieties: Nero d'Avola for the reds, Grillo and Inzolia for the whites.Another red varietal grown exclusively in this area is the Nocera grape, whichcan be vinified as a varietal wine, as well as produce marvelous blends with Nero d’Avola.
