天涯海角、四捨五入 古德明

                
                
問：「天涯海角」，有朋友譯做the edge of the world，並說那是英文成語，對嗎？譯做the edge of the sky and sea可不可以？
答：The edge of the world不是什麼成語，也不是「天涯海角」的最好譯法，而the edge of the sky and sea讀起來更不像英文。《最新林語堂漢英詞典》的譯法是far beyond, in distant place，不見得高明；梁實秋《最新實用漢英辭典》譯法較佳：faraway, distant, or remote places。不過，我認為最好是譯做the ends of the earth。《朗文英漢雙解英語成語辭典》the ends of the earth注釋如下：「anywhere; even the most distant lands or parts of the world到處；天涯海角。」《聖經．使徒行傳》新國際譯本（New International Version）第一章第八節有一句可供參考：You will be my witness in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth（你們要為我作證，在耶路撒冷如是，在整個猶太地區和撒馬利亞如是，直到天涯海角也如是）。
問：「四捨五入」英文怎麼說？
答：「四捨五入」一般說to round off就可以。假如把小數一律進為整數，叫to round up；一律畧去，則叫to round down。而in round figures是「以整數來說」的意思，例如：（1）$19.9 is$20 in round figures（十九元九角，以整數來說，就是二十元）。（2）The price was$14.9, and we rounded it off/ up to$15（價錢是十四元九角，我們就算十五元吧）。
